I need help with a level applications and subjects

So its not actually me but my friend and they’re in a bit of a situation where they wanna do subjects like computer sci and maths, however their parents have made them apply for subjects RE and English which they absolutely despise. They aren’t allowed to have their own personal email nor apply to sixth forms/colleges on their own so their parents did pretty much all of them, completely disregarding their opinions and not even using the personal statement that they had made. Tbh my friends pretty much lost all hope, they’ve already tried to reason to them however their parents won’t listen. Surely there’s a way that these subjects can be changed such as on enrolment/induction day or something along the lines of that?

If you’re in Y11 at the moment, most sixth forms allow you to change your A level once you start Y12. Many people (even those who were initially happy with their A level choices) do swap A levels a few weeks into Y12 because they realise that a subject at A level is very different to the GCSE.

I’m sorry to hear about your friend’s parents. 100% encourage your friend to change their A levels on results day, or a few days into sixth form. I would also encourage them to explain the situation to their sixth form’s pastoral/wellbeing team.

A levels are already very intense if you do subjects you like - I cannot imagine how you would have much success doing those you hate.

Something the must be noted is that in A level you can only change in the first 2 weeks, and most likely need at least 8 or above to get A* or at least A in the actual A level. If your friend is currently on certain 9s on STEM subjects, they will be more than welcome to swap subjects immediately. Since there is a chance that there parents will pull them out of school, I suggest they tell the staffs about this situation when they start their sixth form, and ask for either bursary if they are in private school or scholarship and school is very likely to manage it around quite well or persuade their parents. After all, STEM based jobs do get much higher salary on average than humanity based, so I really don't understand that guy or girls parents but, still there are options they can pursuit STEM.

Do support your friend well and good luck with your GCSE.
