When should i start preparing for uni?

When should I start buying things for uni? Any deals, any other suggestions? Any moving tips? I'm really anxious about it even though it's in 8 months

Hi there!

It's good to start preparing early so don't worry about it still being a while until you start Uni! However, when you buy things depends on how much space you have at home to store it all before you move.

Here are some things that are easily forgotten when you move into uni:

1.

Hangers! These are easily forgotten but you will need them when you move in and you are hanging all of your clothes up.

2.

Tupperware boxes as it can be hard to cook for one so you may have leftovers quite often.

3.

Medicines

4.

Chargers

5.

Your ID/ student cards

6.

A clothes airer

You can also get boxes of kitchen/bedroom items from companies which ship them straight to your uni house, however these can work out more expensive and you don't get to choose exactly what you get. I would recommend searching for deals and if you start now, you can just buy something when it is on offer as there is no rush. IKEA is always a good place to go to, however they often don't have sales so sometimes supermarkets can be better as they have deals more often.

As for moving tips, I would say that my main tip would be to pack things according to which room they are for - e.g. have a bag or two of kitchen things, bag of bathroom things and then bags of things for your bedroom. This is really helpful when you move in as you know where everything is for which is helpful for unpacking.

I would also say to have a bag of essential things that you may need on the day that you move in as if you don't get chance to unpack everything, you know where the things are that you will need - e.g. toothbrush, charger etc.

When you move in, it's good to unpack as much as you can as it will make your room feel more homely. However, on move in day it's good to spend time with your flatmates too so try not to spend the whole day in your room!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi @Blackrose06

Some great advice from the other response.

It's definitely not too early to start buying things! Better to start now and the you don't have to worry about getting everything closer to the time.

I have post that I did that I will link as it might be useful The best places to shop for moving to uni (cheaply)

Hope this is useful

I've been slowly buying things for my daughter for a couple of months. Still a lot to buy.
It's a big expense so it's good to spread it out.

Hi there!

It's totally understandable to be quite nervous about this - it's a big step in your life and there are guaranteed to be many others in the same position. It's great that you're thinking ahead, as this will make you feel more prepared and less stressed last minute when August/September comes along.

If I'm being completely honest with you - Youtube will probably be your best friend for this! It helped me a lot when I was trying to imagine what being a student at my Uni would be like. With the rise of Youtubers and now Tiktokers, I would just google your University and look for current students posting about things like packing, day in their life etc. This genuinely helped me come up with a packing list, find things that I wanted to do when I first arrived in Liverpool so I wasn't just sat there clueless, and also helped me figure out what kind of accommodation I wanted to stay in.

There will be 1000s of videos and posts across the web of people saying what to pack for Uni, so definitely look at these and you will have a complete list - and also as the above have said, starting to buy bits and pieces throughout the year also evens out the cost so you're not spending so much at one go, and also will help you feel more prepared the closer to move in day you get!

Hopefully this helps!!

Hello 🙂 ,

I'd start thinking now, just watch what you use in your day to day life for a few weeks as that will give you an idea of what you'll need. That way you should avoid the infamous potato masher situation where everyone takes a potato masher to university but nobody ever uses them! Don't worry about forgeting things though as you'll have a chance to buy anything you realise you need once you're there.

Hi there
Congratulations on your offer .
Start buying essentials 1-2 months before you resume university. Look for student deals on Amazon, Argos, and student discount sites. Buy basics like bedding, kitchen items, and storage. Pack gradually to reduce stress. Most importantly, don't panic - everyone's in the same boat and universities provide lots of support for new students.

Hi There!
It's completely normal to feel nervous about university, but honestly there is nothing to worry about.
I was the same, stressing and worrying in the months leading up to it, but I found that everything kind of fell into place.
I'd recommend to get all of your shopping of essentials done around a month before you leave. The one mistake every student makes is packing too much stuff, so it might be worth seeing if you can contact your flatmates when you have your accommodation sorted. That way you can discuss who will buy what for the flat because otherwise you'll have multiples of everything in the flat that you might not need.
Everyone feels nervous during the lead up to university, but please try not to stress too much and enjoy the time you have now.
I hope this helps,

Hi

Congratulations on being offered a place to study at your chosen university. I would start by writing a list of all the potential things that you may decide to bring to the University, I would then try to buy it in small but often as it can make the whole process easier.

You can check out our blog on the essentials to bring to uni here

Hi there,

Moving to uni is always a huge step - i found starting to prepare early helped me calm down a bit as i could see i wouldn't have to think about missing anything if i was sorted early.

My best tip was that you don't need a huge amount of things kitchen wise - you're living on your own. When i went i made do with one set of everything - it did mean a lot of washing up during the week but i could spread the cost of uni out over the year picking extra bits up as and when i needed them.

Good luck

Gonna be honest, I haven't mashed a potato in at least a decade.
Frozen mash is king.

Hi!

It is completely normal to feel anxious, this is a huge change and I know I felt the same. I also like to be prepared so I began buying my things as soon as I knew I had a place. I bought the majority of my stuff, especially kitchen supplies, from Asda as I found it cheaper than IKEA for example. The move in process was so smooth and straightforward, I really had nothing to worry about so my advice is to focus on how exciting it is to be starting the next chapter of life!

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂
