Want to apply to med but got a Grade 5 in English Language

Hi, in my gcses i got 88887765, the 5 being in English Language. I'm currently studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A-levels. I was recently accepted into Pathways to Professions Birmingham.

I wanted to know that if i complete P2B and do well in my UCAT and interview, can i still get into to Birmingham with my GCSE grades?

Thanks.
If their requirement is 6 or higher then I think only Birmingham can answer this because of the pathways programme. Ordinarily it would be a straight no but that makes it a less straightforward situation.

Nah… I doubt it. My mates are also applying med and they have straight 9s in 10 subjects(not 8 ) and they also close to full score in UCAT but still says that med application was hard, and trust me almost everyone applying med are similar. Realistically in the competition, even if you get full score and all A* in all you predicted, it will be tough. Universities do ask for grades all above 7s at least and more then 4 subjects 9s is the minimum… I am sorry if this discourages you but if you want to really try, there are always chances. Best luck!

I doubt Birmingham will (defo email to confirm) but as far as I can see you have a few options:
(a) you resit your english language gcse which is obviously not great
(b) you get a decently high ucat and you apply with that to a limited selection of unis
I have tried checking for you and some unis that currently accept a grade 5 in english language (these may change so please make sure you check) are: St Andrews, Plymouth, Brunel and there may be a few more. Queen's Belfast may also however since they score gcses its probably unlikely.

yeah, agree with all of this.

Unis which accept English grade 5 to add to this list:

BSMS (if you are contextual or have a 6 in lit)

Glasgow ( if you have a 6 in lit)

Bristol (need a 7 in maths)

Newcastle (I think but they might have changed)

Cambridge (but still need good GCSEs generally unless have achieved a levels)

Oxford (but need VERY good GCSEs apart from that 5 in English lang which i don’t think you have or you sat your GCSEs in 2020-2021 (which you didn’t))

Imperial if you sit the DET and pass (only £50 or something)(I think they allow this for medicine ik they allow it for other courses).

For all of these you really do need at least a top 7-10% ucat score (bar BSMS).
