Rejected by KCL but accepted into cambridge?

Hi. I just received my offer from cam today for law. Idk what i got on my LNAT & i felt like my interviews went horribly because i kept on asking them to repeat the question and took so long to answer etc😭 i got rejected from KCL on monday. I genuinely dont know how that works, is it because london unis are heavily oversubscribed or was it just bad luck on my part? Im still waiting for my other three options to respond but has anyone else had a similar experience with Kings especially for law???

first of all congrats that's amazing!! not that it happened to me because i didn't apply to oxbridge but i heard a lot of people getting oxbridge interviews and getting rejected from kcl

ive also seen a domestic student who got 29 on the lnat and got an offer from lse that also got rejected from kcl which does say something

If you do not mind me asking, which college were you accepted by?

Congrats on your offer. I assume that you received an offer early because it involves a gap year and a college for mature students.

It doesn't matter what KCL thinks of you, unless you really hoped for KCL and Cambridge is second best for you. But Cambridge likes you, and even as second best it's not so terrible.

KCL appears to adopt a numerical approach to admission. Score x for yes, score y for no. Cambridge takes a more rounded approach and considers all relevant info, not just the LNAT score. Cambridge chooses to dedicate resources to this because, I assume, it wants its admission system to relate to its teaching system. Oxford ditto. KCL adopts a different model.

Thank you so much. It was genuinely unexpected. My GCSEs are not great either so I wasn’t hoping for much but my guess is Cambridge takes a more holistic approach to making offers. Yes omg now that ive research & asked my friends, KCL is weird in making offers!! Also, i got my UCL offer today (it was the only uni i didnt apply for law to) & im so happy! Im a mature student & already have my grades but KCL just made me feel like i wasnt worthy or something😭

Thank you so much. Yes i agree i think KCL’s admission process is a bit more direct whereas Cambridge takes a holistic approach. Yes i am a mature student & already have my grades (: just felt so down on monday because of that rejection but now that I have cam and ucl im fine. I honestly only applied for kings because of the reduced price accommodation scheme😭 otherwise cam & ucl were my top choices

No because how could you even react to that. They’re so unpredictable like u said!! Also this might sound stupid or slightly pretentious but im sure KCL is not on the same level as LSE or UCL like how does it make sense that they’re so picky😭 also ive emailed them like 5 times and used to apply portal thing for a problem over the span of two months and no reply. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise idk😓

Yes now that i went on tsr and tiktok ive seen the same thing. Im so glad its not only me like whats wrong with me🤣 i asked them if its because of my GCSEs but i doubt i will get a reply. Time to move on😭 Thank you so much, i hope the best for you. What’s your top uni choice if you dont mind me asking btw!

Different universities asses students differently, both with the weightings of what they consider & their methodology for valuing interviews/academia etc.

Whilst intrinsically might seem odd, Cambridge a more competitive university offered you but Kings didn’t, but ultimately it’s 2 different systems yielding 2 different results.

When courses like law at top universities select students, they often have an excess number of qualified students who would do great at the university, but they only have a limited capacity for teaching/resources/facilities. As such they all choose an approach that is most appropriate for their institution to filter down students to a volume they can manage but this varies place to place to suit their needs.

Best to focus on the offers you have and move forward with them, Law at Cambridge is a life changing opportunity & go be great, you should be proud.

You need to get over this implicit idea that KCL is in a lower category than Cambridge for Law. KCL is in the top category for several subjects, including Law, and the number of people wanting to study in London or thinking they have no chance for Cambridge/having no chance for Cambridge can mean that the London universities can get more applicants per place and they occasionally end up with a higher proportion of students who have higher grades. That said, Cambridge is arguably better for Law.
