careers in healthcare

Hi,

I’m currently in S5 (yr 12) and for the past year I had been set on the idea of studying medicine when I leave school. However, I recently changed my mind to physiotherapy because I thought I would find being a doctor too stressful and the hours are long. I have now switched back to medicine because I prefer the variety of types of doctors that you can become, and studying medicine would allow me to experience the different departments of healthcare and decide which one I want to go into.

The main things I’m worried about are: I would have to crash higher chemistry next year and get an A (I’ve heard this is pretty difficult), the interviews and UCAT are scary and I’m worried I wouldn’t get in to med school.

I feel like I’m not fully educated on different courses I could study that are still in the healthcare profession. I know that I would not enjoy being a pharmacist, but if there are any other medical-related course options that aren’t as stressful as med school, please let me know.

Thanks,
Isla

Do you have any healthcare-related work experience? If not that should be your priority - it doesn't need to be official placements (hard to get and not that flexible), bank HCA work is pretty easy to get if you're 18 or over and an excellent insight into both the hospital (or GP/community healthcare) environment and what a variety of doctors, nursing staff and AHPs do day-to-day, it's also fully flexible so easy to fit around studying. If you're younger try first aid charities or hospital volunteering (lots of medical and AHP students do this too so a good way to meet people and learn more about what studying entails). I'm applying to uni after quite a while working and volunteering in healthcare and I'd really recommend it, I know exactly what I'm getting into and what fields I'm interested in (turns out it's pretty much the same as what I thought I wanted to do at 18, but with the advantage of knowing for sure, plus the experience looks really good on applications)
