Speech problems ( school related)

Hi ,

Ever since I was a child ( now 16) I struggled with rolling my Rs in any way, the only R I can roll is the French one ( even though I don’t speak French ) , my native language has lots of Rs and so does English and my inability to pronounce it is affecting my social life and confidence . I am a very social person and feel like I can easily make friends if I approach them but my speech problems stop me from being confident . I was considering talking to my school wellbeing officer, should I do that or should I not get support from school and instead go to NHS myself? Apparently speech therapy is free on NHS. I tried watching videos and getting help from parents but I never learn the correct tongue placement and just how to do it! My parents say it is a unique sound and tongue position isn’t similar to other sounds and .when I say it it comes as a “w”. Should I speak to school? Or it isn’t there job? Should I go to the GP? Won’t they get mad I went to GP for a stupid speech problem?

Go to the GP. The whole reason that the therapies exist is because people need them. It might also be worth thinking about what they will say in the appointment and possible replies. Good luck!
