Failed module and resit but passed dissertation

Hi there! I have failed the taught part of my master's degree since I failed one module, including the resit, but I passed my dissertation with 58 credits! Can I still pass my master's degree since I needed 60 credits?
You seem to be conflating credits (the volume of modules passed) with the weighted average percentage.

You need to speak to your university about the regulations for your course. It’s likely that if you don’t have 180credits that you’ll be awarded a postgraduate diploma instead of a masters

Hey,

Hi there! First off, I’m really sorry to hear about the stress you’re going through—it’s not an easy situation. Whether you can still pass your master’s degree depends on the regulations of your university, as each institution has its own rules about progression and awards.

It’s worth reaching out to your university to clarify your situation, as the rules around passing and credits can vary between institutions. Typically, for a master’s degree, you need to achieve a specific number of credits overall (e.g., 180 for the full course), but the policies on failed modules and compensation can differ.

At the University of Salford, we have personal tutors who are there to guide students through academic and personal challenges like this. They can help explain the pass criteria and even advise on next steps. It’s possible your university offers a similar system, if so, I’d strongly recommend reaching out to them for support.

Since you mentioned that you’ve passed your dissertation but are short on credits due to failing a module, it’s important to check with your university whether there are any additional options available. For example:

Compensation Policies: Some universities allow you to compensate for a failed module if your overall average meets a certain threshold, and you’ve achieved a minimum mark in the failed module.

Additional Resits or Alternatives: In some cases, universities offer further opportunities to retake or complete an alternative assessment.

Try not to panic, you’re not alone, and universities are usually willing to work with students to find the best path forward. Reach out for support as soon as possible, and hopefully, you’ll get some clarity on your situation. Best of luck! 😊

Best of luck!
