I’m doing my dt a level soon and the theory side of it is very very similar to the GCSE but just in much more detail. I will say the exams are also a bit harder bc there’s really in depth questions (especially on paper 2) and not much time but once you practice enough and get the hang of it it becomes easier to score top marks. The theory really is just one big memorisation game and the questions are all recycled and the same. The practical side of it really just depends on how much effort you put into your project. Personally I’ve been focusing a lot more in the theory than the practical bc I don’t like my project and it’s too late to change but some ppl in my class are the complete opposite. And practical to theory is very 50:50 in my opinion.

Paper 1 It covers the basics of wood, metal, polymers , papers and boards, smart materials and you must know all their properties, manufacturing process, production types, finishes , wasting/forming/redistribution methods and other really niche stuff like adhesive fixings and stuff like that. The exam paper will give you like picture of a wooden spoon and a metal spoon ant tell you to evaluate and compare them and you just have to use all the information you memorised tbh, there will be at least 7 question like that and they’re all worth 6marks + . Paper 2 is more about the work of designers ( Sir Dyson, Diater Rams etc ….) and design movements. There’s a long list in the textbook. Everything else is kinda common sense and easy it’s stuff like the 6R’s, sustainability and design process (CAD , 2D Drawings isometric drawing ……). If you find stuff like this boring then definitely don’t do a level dt bc the theory lessons are sooooooooooooooo boring bc it’s just a bunch of info you have to memorise and repeat in exams. Hope this helps
