York vs Bath for biochemistry

Hi, I've applied to Bath and York for biochemistry, but I'm torn between them. Bath's course looks better and has lower entry requirements, but York seems like a much friendlier city and gas mire community. If anyone has any insights or can comment on the two courses, I'd be very grateful!
Bio-subjects are tiny at Bath - it focuses almost entirely on Engineering and Management subjects.
And living in Bath costs as much as living in London. Go to York.

Hi there,

Glad to hear you're considering Bath as well as York! My advice would be that this decision is yours and no one else's, so I would go for the one that feels right for you.

I would base your decision first foremost on the course content because if you enjoy and are interested in the modules you are learning then your experience will be overall a lot better and you're more likely to stay motivated. I'd also consider whether each course has a placement option as this can be a great thing to have on your CV as well as a really fun experience.

I hope some of this helps, best wishes!

Hi
I study biochemistry at York and I was also considering Bath when I was first applying. I think it is really important to visit the two campuses if you can to get an idea of what the Biology departments look like and also what your life is going to look like. I can tell you from my experience visiting the two campuses that I got the feeling that biology and chemistry were not as important at Bath than they are at York. At York both departments are very well funded and have a high level of active research with global impact.

At York biochemistry is taught by specialists in both departments and you get a really good foundation of chemistry in your first year with the choice to tailor your degree in the following years based on what subjects you are interested in. The lecturers are very good and are very friendly. I also would agree with York being a very friendly community in general. The campus is beautiful and you get to walk through it often to go between Biology and Chemistry which is just a 15 minute walk so it gives you a breath of fresh air before your next class.

Students also get a lot of academic support in the form of workshops and tutorials as well as personal academic supervisors that keep track of your progress throughout your degree. Exams in Biology are all online 6h open-book exams and in Chemistry they are 4h in person closed book but you bring 1 page of notes.

My main advice when it comes to picking a university for biochemistry is to think about what research is being done in the department and what science are you most interested in. The reason I say this is that in York, in your final year you do a research project with a supervisor so ideally you pick a field of research that you are really interested in.

I hope I have given you a better idea of what biochemistry at York is like. If you come visit us you can see how great the department is!

Hello! I do Biochem at Bath and I don’t really understand when people assume Bath majorly focuses on engineering and management subjects, i’ve never felt that being here and I feel really supported by the department. Some of the Biochemistry and chemistry lecturers are amazing, and the course is only around 150 people in my cohort so we all know each other and it is quite friendly :smile:depends what your priorities are honestly, bath is heavily research focused and skilled based to help your employment prospects i’m not sure how that goes at yorkYou can message me if you have any Qs!!
