Changing degree subject totally in a gap year

i am in year 13 and applied for a stem course for 2025 entry. Im really interested in it but i have always been super passionate about english literature and am quite good at it. I have looked at the course and know i could complete it in a year as I have read most of the material already (for the exam board that i would be doing). i dont know how to make up my mind, i only take physics maths and chem a levels right now so a gap year would be the only option. I just don't know what to do, on one hand i love stem and the physical sciences courses I have applied for but honestly english is also very important to me. i am trying to keep my options open as obviously i still need a minimum of 3 a levels for any subject, and want ot do well in exams this year but I don't know if i should decide now or after the a level exams are done this year and then either reject my firm/insurance on results day and take a gap year
Bear in mind English lit A-level and certainly a degree in English lit is not hust a course in READING literature, its a course in ANALYSING literature. Reading a text for leisure and reading a text closely for literary criticism aren't the same.

If you enjoy literary criticism/analysis though then it seems like a perfectly plausible option

Thanks! I actually really do enjoy analysis and end up helping some of my friends who take English with essays etc lol
Do you suggest waiting until I’ve got all my offers for stem degree to make decision? If so should I reject them now or just wait until results day to reject the choice and start the a level then?

That sounds like a strong indicator to pursue it then

That's up to you - if you know that you wouldn't ultimately plan to attend any of those courses you've currently applied to and are 100% certain you want to do the gap year then it's immaterial whether you get any offers or not as you don't plan to accept them ultimately. If you aren't completely certain then you don't lose anything by waiting until results day in terms of the UCAS application, although you'll probably need to start planning before then where you're going to do the A-level English lit course if you want to maintain that option.

thank you so much! I've already contacted an online college about the course and checked all the deadlines, it is quite flexible. Im strongly tempted but i still love my stem course! I think I'll wait until results day then and maybe even make my mind up before then and start the course early if i decide to go through!
