Council is trying to charge us council tax despite us not living there

Today my old housemates and I received an email that we a lot of council tax. I called up asking why they said 1. Student validity ran out (it was my final year) 2. No one mentioned that we had moved out. I stopped being a student in June but the tenancy ended in early July. There were no outstanding rent payments or anything like that. and no one from the old house stayed in that house. is this legal? on that of that, the email included someone who is was not even on the tenancy. any help, please
Get some legal advice. It sounds dodgy as heck. Even if you actually stopped being a student in June (as opposed to finishing assignments but graduating later), the most should be council tax for that one month. But I'm not a lawyer. The fact that nobody mentioned that you moved out seems inapplicable as now the council do know so as long as you have evidence, they shouldn't be trying to charge you, in my opinion.

Most universities in the UK give you access to some things after you graduate so you can probably get legal advice from them if your university offers it on this subject (a lot of universities have a legal advice service; some of them are even open to the public). If not, Student Services or the Students' Union may be able to direct you to somewhere even though you're technically no longer a student - just make sure to tell them you've graduated.

If none of that helps, you can get legal advice via the Citizens Advice Bureau (although the quality of it depends on the branch - see bottom right of page to do a postcode search; link is for England but there's a link at the top of that page for Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland), or via Civil Legal Advice (depending on income and savings, this may be free; the service is only for England and Wales), or your local law centre if you have one (Law Centres bottom left for postcode search). Citizens Advice Bureau advice is always free on the initial meeting, as far as I know, as long as the subject is something they can advise on.

Provide them with proof of your tenancy end date and a copy of your student certificates. You will only be charged from the date your course ended.
