Considering Postgraduate Study in Japanese Studies?

I am the Convenor of the MA Japanese Studies Programme at SOAS University of London. If you’re in your final year of undergraduate study and thinking about the next step in your academic or professional journey, our programme could be the right fit for you.

At SOAS, our MA Japanese Studies programme is interdisciplinary and highly customizable. You’ll have the chance to explore a wide range of topics, including Japan’s history, politics, literature, cinema, and more. Whether your interests lie in modern Japan’s role on the global stage or premodern history and culture, this programme is designed to give you the tools to dive deeper into your passion.

You can complete the programme in one year full-time or two years part-time, giving you the flexibility to fit your studies around your other commitments.

For those who want to develop advanced Japanese language skills, I’m thrilled to highlight our MA Japanese Studies and Intensive Language option. This two-year programme includes a year of language immersion, featuring a summer of intensive study in Hokkaido, Japan. Spending this time in Hokkaido offers you the opportunity to significantly improve your Japanese proficiency while immersing yourself in the unique culture and natural beauty of the region.

If you’re considering careers in diplomacy, international business, or translation—or simply want to deeply engage with Japanese language and culture—this programme is an excellent choice.
