AS Level Further Maths in Year 12 with A level

My school is making us take AS Level further maths as well as A-Level Maths in Year 13 “just in case” we want to drop out or don’t do as well as we hoped. Personally, I wouldn’t want to because if I don’t do well in it it would compromise my uni applications. Also, it’s straight after mocks and we still have to do lessons the week of exams so it would be quite stressful revising other subjects whilst revising for the tests. What are the pros and cons of doing both? Thank you

It is definitely good just in case you don't want to continue it to A Level as AS Further Maths is one of the few AS Levels that is still taken into consideration by unis for certain courses.

I applied for Maths and Economics (and MORSE at Warwick) and have received 3 offers so far. For my offers from Warwick and Durham, AS Further Maths was apart of my offer. So in my case doing AS Further Maths was incredibly beneficial as I needed to do it to get into Durham and it led to a lower offer at Warwick than if I didn't do AS FM. By the way, my sixth form does not offer Further Maths at all so I studied it independently.

This is a very specific case for the courses I applied to so it may be not be the case for you. Gaining extra qualification can be great, if you get a good grade in it.

I understand your worries especially with it being around your mock period. But if you are 100% sure you will do it at A Level, maybe speak to your head of year or Maths teacher.

I know for a fact I would want to do it because it’s highly recommended for the course at the unis I want to apply to. To be fair though, I am finding it a bit difficult so maybe it would be too bad to have a back up . Thank you for the help.

Congrats on the offers by the way!

PMT has some past paper questions by topic for core pure so I mainly use them and my Edexcel textbooks.
