Kitchen Sharing in Accommodation

Hi. I was just wondering what happens when sharing a kitchen at uni ? I’m looking at going to UCA but wasn’t sure what I would do with my own crockery, utensils and food without people stealing or using them.

Normally each person has their own cupboards and drawers as well as shelf in the fridge and they take roughly two of everything ( 2 plates, 2 mugs etc) plus the necessary cooking equipment . People do not tend to use other people’s things if they are washed and tidied away on a timely basis unless you have agreed that some things can be shared.( sandwich toastie makers etc) Stealing isn’t really an issue although borrowing t spoons etc is commonplace. If you don’t want this to happen then just be clear about it at the beginning but don’t be surprised if when you need a cake pan or other item your flatmates don’t want to share.

Hi,

Generally, you will have your own cupboard space (decided between you and your flatmates upon arrival) as well as a space in the fridge and freezer. I haven't found it to be a problem in terms of people using my things without asking, if this is a problem this is something you can discuss with them or with your university advisory team at a later date. I wouldn't worry about this at this moment as it is not likely to happen.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Hey there, like what the others have mentioned, you usually would have your own cupboard or shelves to keep your personal utensils and cutlery! If this isn't the case you can always store them in your room and bring what you need to the kitchen when you want to cook. You can try labelling your food in the fridge as well or speak to your flatmates to assign space in the fridge for everyone 🙂 I hope this helps!

A set of Tupperware with your name on for the fridge is a good idea as well to put cheese and opened packets in. People always think twice about “borrowing” something that is easily identifiable as belonging to someone else when they take it out of the fridge, whereas a packet of grated cheese belonging to one person can look the same as another packet belonging to the flatmate.

Hey there 😁

Over the past few years, I’ve lived in several shared accommodations, and I’ve never experienced anyone stealing my belongings or using my kitchen equipment. Typically, everyone has their own cupboards, and I haven’t seen anyone going through someone else’s. Of course, it depends on the people you live with, but I think this kind of behaviour is quite rare. We’re adults, and most of us know how to respect others. Honestly, I’ve never even heard of such issues, so I believe you should be fine.

Living in shared accommodation is also a fantastic experience. It’s so much more enjoyable to have people around, and you often end up forming strong relationships with many of them. These connections can become a significant and memorable part of your university journey.

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Hi there,

It seems like my experience is an outlier here!

I currently live in a flat with a shared kitchen, with people I never met prior. It was fine at first, and they all seemed nice, but I found that the kitchen quickly went to shambles! A lot of my kitchen utensils went missing, and a lot of my things were being used and not cleaned/put back afterwards. Certain members of the flat are also quite messy, which is a pain, and they fail to take responsibility and contribute to cleaning.

However, it's important to speak to them directly or a member of staff if this happens. There really is no other way to resolve it, unless you want to keep all of your belongings in your room, which I think is unfair because you are paying for that space! You have every right to respectfully ask for them to not touch your things, and if they continue to disrespect that, it is completely fine to get a member of staff involved.

This isn't to say every experience is like this - it definitely isn't. I have friends who have wonderful flatmates, and some who are fifty-fifty. It's just good to be mindful and prepared for these types of scenarios, and what you can do to mitigate them! 🙂

I hope this helps,
