What CSM Fashion BA should I take for somebody that a multidisciplinary creative?

Unfortunately, due to health reasons, I couldn’t obtain GCSEs, but I’m retaking them now. I already have functional skills and a UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design, and I plan to do a Level 3/4 Foundation in Art and Design, likely the diagnostic route. I need advice on a degree as a multidisciplinary creative. I’m interested in fashion design (clothing, costumes for musicians, and my brand) and also enjoy animation, illustration, painting, surface patterns, performing arts (costume design, acting, dance), and music (writing lyrics). At UAL insights, tutors called me fashion communication, fine art, or print rather than womenswear, which I wanted. I feel everything is connected and can’t choose one. What should I do?

Hi there,

It sounds like you have loads of creative interests - which is great! I felt pretty similar when choosing my uni options as I love so many areas within fashion and art.

I personally found my art and design foundation the most helpful choice I've made to date as it allowed me to explore different areas of art and design, and then when I specialized in fashion and textiles for my final project I was able to decide that fashion design was the option for me. So potentially for the time being, you might want to keep your options open until you've chance to explore your options further.

I would say fashion design is a good option if you're wanting to choose a fashion creative subject. I think the main distinction with design to other fashion courses is that you've got to be prepared to pattern cut and sew, which isn't something that should put you off fashion design as it's still a creative part of the design process, it's just something to be aware of. I personally love my fashion design as I can still draw, illustrate and design, which is my favorite part, but I'm also challenged when it comes to garment construction so I feel like I'm still learning while I'm doing something I'm good at.

There's also nothing stopping you from mixing subjects together too. For example, if you chose fashion communication, this doesn't mean you can't explore elements of fashion design or textiles, or even animation or illustration in your communication course as you could find ways to interlink the different areas. And it's also worth mentioning that just because you choose a certain subject as one point in time, it doesn't restrict you to that subject forever. So if you were to choose Womenswear design at CSM, you could still move onto other areas within fashion in the future.

I hope all goes well with your current studies and you figure out what's best for you. 🙂
