RAF Pilot

not sure if this is the right type of place for this but im new so yk

Basically i want to be a raf pilot, im currently 19 in year 12 (1st year of college) studying biology business and sociology. so far my grades are okish B,D,A* and im just looking for any type of guidance towards trying to reach this goal. ive called up recuriters and they said roughly by december this year i can start my application as ill have my predicted grades from second year and im about to start hitting the gym again and getting into to phys condition,
i have 4 months previous ‘military’ experience (i got med discharged out of basic for a stress fracture 🤦*♂️ in basic army infantry) so not sure if this would help at all. getting my medical records cleared soon as ill go for a ‘check up’ just to get my legs signed off.

basically apart from getting fit and getting as high grades as possible on my a levels is there any thing else i can do? i would go to uni and study a course whilst doing the university air squadron, but unfortunately due to my age ill be roughly 25 when i finish uni and therefore not be allowed to apply. any recommendations on what to do apart from get a degree or people persuading me not to do it is greatly appreciated 🙏🙏
thanks alot

The only thing that really could be questioned from your Army service, other than medically, is why you have made such a major career change in terms of the role and going for a commission after applying for soldier.

As far as qualifications go, you only need to meet the requirements; that is all that is considered. Getting the highest possible grades doesn't make you a more competitive candidate, and as an ex-RAF Recruiter I had straight A students and graduates who failed the selection test or interview.

Leadership potential is shown by being able to say things like I managed, organised, had responsibility for. Have you not been a prefect, mentor, head boy, been involved in charity work, fundraising, volunteering, sports? Think about what you do in your job; do you lock up a building, handle cash, look after stock and if not, could you ask about extra duties? And if you have spare time, could you join the Air Cadets as an instructor? Support a charity? Take on a role at college or set up an event there?

Thanks so much for this help, my job currently is a duty manager managing multiple facilities for hirers to come in and use so putting it that way i think that would help greatly towards some leadership experience. ive asked my local air cadets if i can join or at least talk to the officer who runs it and ask for any personal face to face advice anything like that. next year on college ill join the student union (if i can) and maybe ill look into doing some charity work aswell.
Thanks again so much for ur help and any other tips or anything is greatly appreciated.
for switching from soldier to an officer its because where i went in to depot and stuff, to put it lightly, is that it was all physically demanding but none of it really was intelectually demanding at all. also joining infantry i wasnt looking forward into my future and what experience i could gain from it to transfer into civvy life.
main thing im dissapointed abt is being too old to go to uni and so not being able to get any flying experience unless my parents are secret millionaires lol.

Ive seen youve answered alot alot of stuff on this sorry for being another repetition in ur answers so ur help is greatly appreciated thanks 🙏

No problem! 😊

My only other advice would be to get involved with responsibilities other than work (and yes, your job role sounds good) ASAP, to show a commitment towards them. If the interview format hasn't changed since my time you'll be asked what opportunities you had inside and outside of school/college/uni etc and what opportunities you took. I once recommended a candidate come back in 6 months time after interview; he was a graduate, but who had done nothing but study all the way through school and uni. His job wasn't enough to support leadership potential, and he'd started a hobby literally 2 months before applying, hoping that would be enough; it wasn't. He took it all on board and second time round he passed.

brilliant, that story is good motivatio too💪, ive just been offered at college an opportunity to do an entrepreneurship program and potentially run my own small business with funding and support from my local council! not sure if this specifically is something that shows leadership potential as id only be managing myself and the business rather than people but im sure this would look good to do alongside work and studies either way. also second year of college i will try and become a qualified scuba dive instructor so i think for now im going along the right track. your help has been much appreciated thank you so much
