rant

Hi everyone, I’m in a really difficult situation and would appreciate any advice or support. I worked so hard to achieve amazing A-Level results and even secured a place at the University of Manchester. I completed my UCAS application and personal statement, but I couldn’t go because I didn’t meet the three-year UK residency requirement for funding. I decided to pivot and apply for apprenticeships instead. I went through the entire process—online assessments, assessment centres, and final interviews—and was thrilled to receive an apprenticeship offer for September 2025. However, I’ve now realised I can’t take up the offer because of my visa status. It feels like every door I try is closing on me, and I’m not sure where to turn next. If anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice on what I could do, I’d be really grateful. It feels so frustrating to be held back by things outside my control.

hey sorry to hear that - must be devastating to not be able to take up 2 offers because of residency requirements. have you asked them about the visa status for the apprenticeship? don't withdraw unless they explicitly say that, firms do take up exceptional candidates and fund work visas for them. have you applied to other universities, since you might meet the requirement by then? or looked towards borrowing money from a bank?

Hi, thanks for replying! Um so here's the situation: on the gov website it says to be here for 3 years for apprenticeships so idk why that company wants my visa to be valid for the entire duration of the apprenticeship bc it doesn't say that on the gov website. With universities, the issue is that in England u need to be here for 3 years with ILR (which I don't have), but I've been here for 3 years. Im gonna ring Unis in Scotland bc they're residency requirements are different so they might consider me home or international but for a lower price. I'll also ask Manchester (I have deferred offer) to re-assess my situation, but I have very little hope as they're probably the worst uni I have ever contacted- they won't give me a scholarship bc I'm applying from another country but they won't consider me home either make it make sense. I have no idea what I'll do, there's is no way to progress in this country if you've come the legal way, unfortunately. Nothing ACC matters, no matter what grades I've gotten how hard I've worked, I'm being rejected bc of some immigration status outside of my control. I also DONT need a work visa at all.
