strong vs weak a level subjects

are strong subjects and weak subjects actually a thing? i really want to take english lit, film studies, and classic civilisations for a level, and potentially go to a russel group uni (maybe even oxbridge) for english. i've been told by my parents that i need to take another strong subject, but my only other option is history which i dont want to take, and ive looked at university requirements, and all i need is english, and its reccomended to take other essay based subjects, and both film studies and classics are essay based. idk what to do???
There’s no such thing.

Unis broadly distinguish subject as follows:

- Essential
- Preferred (where they publish a list of preferred subjects on their website)
- Everything else, all considered equally

Ignore your parents. Just check uni sites for any info on the above. If you meet any requirements then take whatever else you enjoy or will get the highest grade in.
