Sainsburys cafes to close.

It has been announced that all of the Sinsburys cafes are to close. And jobs will be lost because of this.
What are your thoughts?

Good news, only time I've been in one was work experience in yr15. Didn't help me get a job.

A shame, the one in my local always seemed fairly busy and it was a nice option to grab some warm food.

Not terribly surprised. I think for a lot of businesses when they start adding these extra services and lifestyle products they have a limited life until the business, for whatever reason, choses to refocus on their core market.

Judging by the amount of closures and cafe/food places for rent I think the cafe/fancy coffee market got oversaturated to put it mildly. Cost of living still hurting things a lot, a £3-4 for a coffee or cake starts to become a one off treat rather than a daily stop.

I'm a tad surprised given that my local Tesco Cafes are normally pretty full and margins should be high.

They'll come and go, some may do well for a period and some might genuinely be permanently integrated so I'm not shocked you're seeing some busy examples, but overall it's a v saturated market for now - A main difference with Tesco is they have the ability to run it at a loss and/or balance it against customer traffic (IKEA is a good example), an indy place just goes out of business. But the issue a company like Tesco has is it's often just a matter of time until there is a change on the board and someone start talking about cost cutting and 'getting back to our foundations' etc and then all these little side projects like cafes, mobile contracts and banking are in the crosshairs.
Last time I checked they were going to franchise them out this article seems silent on that?

I remember Starbucks franchises going into Sainsbury's when Starbucks wasn't even that big here back in the early 00s! :shakecane:
