Studying nursing after living in Australia

I really want to study nursing, however I have been living in Australia on and off. In the last 3 years I have spent only 12 months total living in the uk. I have wanted to return home for a long time but have not been able to until now.

I know student finance will only give tuition and maintenance loan if you have been living in uk for 3 years before your course, but is there any way around this for nursing? Considering the countries need for more nurses?

Or is the only way to apply in 3 years time after living back in the uk? In which case i would seriously have to reconsider as I am already a ‘mature’ student

Hi there,

When would your course start and when did you move back to the UK? When you moved to Australia was it a permanent move or on a temporary basis?

Thanks, Drew

Thank you for your reply,

I originally came to Australia on a temporary working holiday visa, then studied on a student visa, then had a child who is a dual citizen. The last 3 years I have only spent 12 months total living in the UK due to the other parents consent terms until now.

I was intending to apply for September 25 until I read the rule about ‘3 years living in the uk before the course starts’. I guess I’m more at the stage of finding out if it’s actually possible.

Hi there,

It is possible to get funding even if you do not have the 3 years residency in the UK however you would need to provide evidence that your stay in Australia was only on a temporary basis. If you cannot prove this then you would need to be living in the UK before the 1st day of the 1st academic year of your course.

Thanks, Drew

Thank you for your reply,

I’m not sure how I would be able to prove it’s temporary. Is there anyway I can find out if I would get the funding before having to apply for the course, interview and then apply for student finance?

Have you missed out ‘for 3 years’ from that last sentence in your last reply ?

Hi there,

Yes sorry that was missed out. You would need to submit an application and we would need to assess your evidence before we could tell you if you were eligible or not. We would ask for evidence such as temporary visas or temporary work contracts. We can also accept evidence that shows you retained a link to the UK such as bank accounts or paying for bills in the UK.

Thanks, Drew
