Thoughts on Plymouth?

I'm applying for university at Bath Spa, Portsmouth, Essex, Bristol & Leeds, but I'm considering trading one of these for Plymouth. I'm happy with the course modules, but I'm worrying about whether Plymouth is a pleasant place to study & live? I was raised in Portishead and I love it, but I don't know if Plymouth compares.

I'd love to say it is but I'm hesitant because I haven't gotten around to visiting yet - I've seen mixed reviews online but positive things from those I've met!

Hi there! 😁 I'm a current Plymouth student so would be happy to share my opinions/experiences with you!

The location was one of, if not the, biggest factor for me in choosing a university and, in the end, visiting Plymouth for an open day helped to make my mind up for where I wanted to spend my time studying and living. One of the biggest draws for me was how close the university is to the sea! Being able to walk out of a lecture and have the National Marine Park just 5/10 minutes away is great as it means plenty of sea swims, coastal study sessions, beach BBQ's, skating, walks, and water sports. 😊

The city itself is super student friendly- it's reasonably affordable to live compared to many other large cities and has a good balance of being nice and calm for a city, but with plenty going on and everything you could need whilst studying. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cafés, shopping centres, entertainment, pubs, clubs and bars just seconds from the main campus, which means everything you could need and plenty of locations to apply for part time work too.

The campus is a super pleasant, modern and welcoming place to study- I got this atmosphere when visiting on an open day and there's always something going on but is never too overcrowded or busy. From the campus market, to plant sales, SU events, the summer ball, or even just going for a walk in the gardens or reservoir, it makes for a really nice place to spend most of your day. The facilities, buildings, study spaces, and equipment, are excellent too with lots of investment into the student experience.

If you have any specific questions or anything you'd like to know, feel free to reach out! ☺️

Best of luck! 🙌
