Are these A-level subjects a good pick for studying zoology in uni?

I want to pick chemistry and biology and media studies for a levels, though when consulting with someone I wasn't really sure if it was a good idea.

Best way is to check zoology uni courses and look at the subject requirements !

Hi donek,

I'm a current PhD student in Zoology at the University of Exeter, having also studied here for my undergraduate and masters. I can't recommend studying this subject enough, and I've had a really rewarding time researching evolution and animal behaviour so far.

To answer you're question, I'd reiterate what the previous comment has mentioned. It's worth looking at different universities you are interested in studying Zoology at to check their entry requirements, so you don't get caught out later when making your university applications. As an example for Exeter, you can find the course by searching our website and then checking the entry requirements here. You can see you would typically need ABB, with a B in a science subject. Exeter define science subjects a little lower down on the same webpage, but you can see that both Biology and Chemistry would qualify for this part of the criteria.

I'd recommend doing the same with other universities you might be interested in to get a feel for the entry requirements. What Uni can be a good website for looking up courses across lots of universities at the same time. From my experience, albeit many years ago now, most Zoology courses requested at least one, or sometimes two science subjects, but the exact definition of what is considered a science can vary from institution to institution. In any case, I think studying both Biology and Chemistry should have you covered.

My final advice would be to study what you're most interested and best at, as this will likely give you the most chance of success during your A Levels and keep you motivated during the more challenging parts of the course or exam season. Lots of university courses are designed with quite foundational first years where everyone is caught up to the same level, so don't worry if you think your choice of A Levels might leave you with a knowledge gap or weakness in any particular area.

I hope that's helpful, but let me know if you have any further questions about studying Zoology at university.

Hi, I’m not currently studying zoology but I have applied to study it at Bristol - my A levels are biology chemistry and product design and they have given me an offer of AAA (as long as you meet the requirements then I don’t think that have any reason to reject you)
As above, if it isnt specified, your third subject can be any subject - all they are interested in is your 3rd grade.

Hi, I'm a current 2nd year zoology student at the university of Southampton! It's such an interesting degree and it's great you are looking to apply.

When I was applying I found most unis wanted biology and another science, which chemistry would be for you. Like others have said above, I would always check on the university websites of places you might apply to, to make sure you meet subject entry requirements. I would do subjects you enjoy as that's usually a way to do well in a levels and have a good time

I wish you well in a levels and applications, feel free to ask if you have any more questions!
