I'm looking for a university to study film and screenwriting in the UK

Hello! In a few months, I'll need to start applying to universities, and I want to study Film and Television, specifically screenwriting.
I'm an international student, and I think the UK is a great option for me, though I'll be depending on scholarships. I have strong grades, so I believe I should be eligible for some.

I've been looking into universities offering a good BA in Film and Television, and so far, my top choices are UAL (LCC), Bournemouth, and Westminster. Do you think these are good options? Should I consider other universities? Is it difficult to get scholarships as an international student? And what's the student life like at these universities?

One of my goals is to pursue a Screenwriting MA at NFTS after finishing my degree, so I want to make sure I get the best preparation.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I suspect it will be nigh on impossible to get a scholarship as an international student for those courses. Nearly all scholarships in the UK depend on philanthropy, ie someone donating an enormous sum of money so the interest can be taken off each year to support students. Modern universities and modern courses simply don't have those resources.

It's possible that some international Director/Producer had funded a prize or bursary, but a full scholarship, for an international student, for a creative course, at one of those unis? It will be a short Google search, and then buy a lottery ticket instead.

I completely understand that full scholarships for international students, especially for creative courses, are rare in the UK. However, I'm not sonly relying on UK-based scholarships. My main focus is on external scholarships, such as those offered by foundations in my home country or international organizations. I’m also not expecting a full scholarship, a partial funding that covers enough portion of the costs would already make a big difference for me.

Hi Anonymous,

My name is Q and I am a 4th Year Media Production student at Bournemouth University (BU).

What I like about Media at Bournemouth is that there are so many opportunities for you to go out and participate in extra curricular activities, such as Nerve Media (our student media network) and generally. The new Poole Gateway building has amazing facilities for TV Production, and across many of the courses in the department you can get to explore different roles and mediums.

At Bournemouth, we have a few options for Media type courses as we have 3 main programmes, which I will detail below along with their links:
BA Media Production: This course covers a range of different media types throughout the 3 years, where you will have many opportunities to work in different roles such as script. Scriptwriting is also taught from the first year, so you can apply what you have learnt to further years.
BA Film: This course is also good for exploring different media types and roles as well as having a unit on Script Skills in the second year.
BA Film & Television Production: This course is heavily focused on television production and has access to the TV studios unlike the other course. The first year of this course also includes storytelling and scriptwriting.

For International undergraduate scholarships, there is an academic scholarship that you can put towards your degree, or music or sports scholarships that you can put towards those. You can find out more about those here: https://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/fees-funding/scholarships/international-student-scholarships.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions.
