Biological Sciences (Bsc) at UCL

Hi, I was wondering what the career prospects look like for someone who's planning to take a Biological Sciences degree at UCL. Ive read through the curriculum and although its not all about ecology, most of it is. I'm not someone who's interested in doing a field based/ evolution/ ecology job, but rather a scientist who specialises in the chemistry aspect of drugs and so on. I am unable to undertake a Chemistry degree ad I don't do A-Level Chemistry, but I was wondering if there is any specific masters programme I can do, or any way to become a drug discovery scientist/ medicinal scientist with this degree. Also is this a decent degree? Is it going to open up a lot of doors, or am I limiting myself

Thanks

The biosciences course at UCL seems more broad than focused on ecology and/or conservation. Those are strands available on the course but there are also strands focused on cell biology, (human) genetics, and computational biology: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/biosciences/biological-sciences-degrees

Note that drug discovery is very much an area of chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences. Biologists may be involved in the biomedical research around these focusing on the biological effects of newly discovered drugs, clinical trials, and other things in the pharmacology regime, they probably aren't the ones actually creating these directly.

You may want to consider if your career goals and interests would be best served by taking a gap year to take A-level Chemistry, or applying to a chemistry related course with a foundation year.

Applied mid November and haven’t heard anything too, also haven’t seen anyone get a bio offer at UCL other than biochemistry
