Uni accommodation advise

I'm going to uni next year to study zoology but I have to do a foundation year to get onto the course.

I live a 40min train ride away and this would be quicker then driving in as it's in manchester.

I want to experience the uni life and have planned to live at home for my foundation year and then move out into uni halls for my first year of the zoology degree. After this I plan to move back home for my last 2 years.

I feel unsure wether I'm making the right decision to live at home for my foundation year as I don't wana struggle to make friends. And then I also feel it may be odd for me to go into uni halls for my first year of my degree as I would be a year older than everyone else.

Also I feel bad leaving my perents and I rly like living at home. And it would cost about 16k per year for me to live away

Plz help cos idk what to do 🥲

Hi untreated-world👋

I think the decision you've made makes sense. There will be more value in living in halls during the first year of the degree course. You're likely to want to spend more time getting to know your classmates and the people you'll be studying with during the majority of your time at university.

After the first year of a degree, many students decide to live in private accommodation with the friends they made in the first year. So, you'll find people will disperse a little, but you should have a sound friendship group by this point.

While studying your foundation year, you won't be the only person living at home. Everyone will be in the same position as you, wanting to make friends and to get to know one another. You'll have plenty of opportunities to spend time with your classmates. You'll find yourselves going for coffee and lunch with one another, having study sessions in the library and attending campus events together.

I would suggest using your foundation year as an opportunity to join clubs or societies. Many of the friendships you make through doing so will still be around as you transition onto your degree.

I wish you the best of luck in starting university in the coming months.
