Should I attend Open Days?

Hi all 😁

💡What are your thoughts on attending Open Days? Do you think they’re essential or just a waste of time? 💡

Have you been to any Open Days? Or are you planning to? How was your experience? Is it worth it? I would love to hear your reflection and stories!

Personally, I believe that Open Days offer the best opportunity to experience university life and the learning environment firsthand, helping you decide if a university is the right fit for you 🤝 Here are some key reasons why attending an Open Day is a must for me:

1. Speak with academics and current students 🎓

Open Days give you the chance to ask direct questions to the people who know the university best. Whether it’s about your specific course, student life, or the local area, these conversations can provide insights you won’t find on websites.

2. Explore the campus in-depth 🏫

Seeing the campus with your own eyes is the best way to understand the atmosphere and whether you can picture yourself studying there. Student ambassadors will often give tours, showing you the key facilities and areas where you'll be spending mostof your time.

Moreover, deciding where to live is a big part of your university experience. Open Days often provide tours of student accommodations, giving you a sense of the different housing options and their proximity to the campus.

3. Get to know the local area 🌆

University life isn’t just about studying. Where you live plays a huge role too. Open Days allow you to explore the city or town, its amenities, and see if it feels like a place you would enjoy calling home and where you could pursue your passions.

4. Attend taster sessions 🔬

Many Open Days include sample lectures or taster sessions, where you can experience firsthand what your classes might be like. This can help you feel more confident about your course choice.

Additionally, universities sometimes offer exclusive travel and accommodation discounts for Open Day attendees, making it easierand more affordable to visit from anywhere in the country 💸

All in all, I think that Open Days are an essential step in making an informed decision about your university future. Take the opportunity to explore, ask questions, and immerse yourself in the university environment to help you choose the best place for you!

DON'T FORGET TO SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AND EXPERIENCE! 🌟

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directlythrough The Ambassador Platform.

Thankyou Julia!

I would second this advice - indeed there is a lot to be gained and found out from going to an open day, and recently TSR research has found that applicants rated visiting open days before applying as the most helpful factor in making their firm choice, and also that 44% applicants have experienced being put off shortlisting a uni based on its open day!

Whilst concrete factors are super-important (course content, location, distance from family, league tables), just getting a 'feel for the place' has the potential to be a dealbreaker and you may be surprised how much impact it may have on your decision!

I hope this helps, best wishes everyone!

Hi Julia!

I agree that attending open days are important and they are something that really helped me to make up my mind with which uni I wanted to go to!

I think they are good as it means you get a really good feel for the uni and the city in general which may be hard to do online (even though it is still worth looking online at all the information you can find!).

I also liked talking to the tutors who would be teaching on the course as again, it gives a good feel of how your experience will be. I also liked talking to the student ambassadors that were there as they can give a different perspective and can tell you what the course is like for them!

I think looking around accommodation is good too as this made me feel more at home and more ready to move out and live there.

It is also a really good opportunity to look around the town/city that you will be living in and this also helps with you getting a feel for the place!

If you do go to any open days, make sure you ask lots of questions as this is your best opportunity to ask any questions you have and get answers directly from the course leaders/tutors!

I hope some of this helps 🙂

Hi

I agree with all the great advice mentioned above.

I think that it is really important to attend open days as you get a sense of what the university feels like and the structure of the courses. I think that it is a really important part of your selection process in picking which university to come to. This is because you want the university to be the right fit for you and for it to be somewhere where you will strive for success.

I hope this helps,

Hi everyone,

Some great advice here! Being a recent graduate, I can add some of my experience from a few years back.Visiting open days was the most beneficial aspect of researching and deciding on what university to go to. It was important for me to visit the accommodation, speak to lecturers and explore the campus I would be studying at. I was able to get a feeling for the uni and the city. I went for the university and campus that made me feel the most welcome, excited and one I could see myself most at 🙂

Hope this helps,
^Zac
