Hey! with cyber security avenue, you would usually follow digital and technology solutions first, with most universities you don't have to pick your specialism straight way (it offers software engineering, cyber security and data analysis) so I would say if you're really unsure to follow that pathway with cybersecurity as your focus, and if you decide it doesn't fit with you to request changing specialisms.

Hey,

Both Cybersecurity and Computer Science are excellent degree choices, but the right one depends on your interests and career goals.

A Cybersecurity degree is more specialised from the start. It focuses on protecting systems, networks, and data from cyber threats. You'll cover topics like ethical hacking, cryptography, digital forensics, and network security. If you're interested in tackling cybercrime, preventing data breaches, then this could be the right path. Careers include roles such as security analyst, penetration tester, security consultant, and cybersecurity engineer.

On the other hand, a Computer Science degree offers a broader foundation in computing. You’ll study programming, algorithms, databases, software engineering, and even areas like artificial intelligence and machine learning. This degree gives you the flexibility to explore different fields within technology before specialising. While you can still pursue cybersecurity after graduation, you’ll also have the option to move into roles like software developer, data scientist, systems architect, or AI specialist.

If you’re unsure, attending open days is a great way to explore both options. Talking to lecturers and current students can give you an insight into what each course covers and what the workload is like, you can book onto an open day at The University of Salford here. Also, have a close look at the modules offered in each course, some Computer Science degrees offer a cybersecurity pathway, giving you the best of both worlds.

Ultimately, think about whether you want to focus on security and defence in technology right from the start, or if you prefer a broader foundation with the option to specialise later. Both fields have promising career prospects, so it’s all about what excites you most!

Hi there,

I am myself a Cyber Security student, who also really enjoys coding and is actually currently completing a one year placement as a software engineer. Therefore, I might be a bit biased towards Cyber Security but here's my opinion. My choice was Cyber Security as it is a quickly growing industry with endless opportunities for growth. I also like studying technology and its application outside the box, which is really what we do in Cyber Security. We not only learn how to build technology, but details about how it works, how it can be broken and/or secured. Biggest benefit is that I still code a lot and my Cyber Security degree is no obstacle for me to apply for software engineering roles.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Ilya
