How to write faster

Hey guys, do any of you take an essay subject for Alevels?
I was wondering if there are any tips for writing faster in essays! (My handwriting is already very small and I don’t try to write neatly at all.)
I would greatly appreciate any insights from anyone😊 Thank you.

Hi @vmvmvmvm

I would recommend taking time to practise writing things out by hand. For example, writing out answers to exam questions by hand within the time limit rather than typing them. This practise should help you to increase your speed.

You could also try to find ways that you can share your ideas in essays in less words as this will help you to say everything you want to without having to write as much.

Hope that helps!

Hi there!

I hope you are doing well🙂 I would recommend when you are doing revision practice papers, actually writing your answers out in a timed condition to see what you could improve on and what you did well! It is good and all typing out answers but the reality is during the exam, this is not going to be the situation.

Hope this helps!

Hello! I’m quite a fast writer. I would recommend planning a little bit (3-5 points) so you can easily refer back to them while writing. Doing practice papers in timed conditions will also help you write faster. Try not to edit or think *too* much about what you’re writing.
A shorter exercise you can do is having to write a short answer in a very short amount of time (2 minutes, without stopping). This will allow you to just write without hinderance.

Speaking from personal experience;

For handwriting, I used to have handwriting similar to Comic Sans but it was super slow, so I had to ditch it during my IGCSEs.
My new handwriting comes more naturally, it's italic (because my paper is always slanted lol), and my letters are more connected—if that makes sense. I waste less time if it follows a cursive style, so I suggest experimenting with different styles!
Maybe write a paragraph with each style and see which feels more comfortable and natural yet also speedy enough. Finding your best style takes time.

Otherwise, for the essay itself, try to have a rough plan before writing. Taking time to give your essay a general direction instead of writing aimlessly or from the top of your head helps quite a bit! This tip was drilled into me by my English Language and Literature teacher lol

All the best‼️
