What uni should I put as firm/insurance

I have no idea what is my safest option for firm and insurance for uni.
My predicted are ABC but I really don’t think i’m going to get those grades. I also do an EPQ which I think i’ll get an A in. I’ve applied to 5 unis and got offers from all but leeds (waiting for reply). They are
- Leeds: International history and politics (AAA)
- Loughborough : History and international relations (offer ABB)
- Leicester : History and International relations (offer ABB or BBB with a B in EPQ)
- Liverpool : History and Criminology (offer ABB or BBB with an A in EPQ)
- Nottingham Trent History with international relations (offer 112 tariff points)

I really want to put Leeds and Loughborough down but are these way too aspirational even for my predicted?
I’m also debating liverpool but it’s not the course I want to do (Does History or IR or any alternate normally come up in clearing?) and Leicester but I’ve heard it’s quite a quiet uni and I really want to further my sport and would suit a livelier uni.
Should I just put my top 2 despite the grades and hope to get into a good uni through clearing?

You have a long time to think about this so do not rush your decision but go and visit on offer holder days.

A quick look suggests that your insurance would be Nottingham Trent, but only if it is a place you would be happy to go to.

Then you would choose a firm from the others. The one that has the best course for you and where you would be happy to live

Have you actually applied yet?
If so, do you have any offers yet?

Thank you! That’s what i’m stuck on because a lot of people have said I can get into Trent or get into a slightly better uni with a similar course on clearing instead?

I'd say that a University you have researched, visited and applied for is better than a quick change in clearing. If you can see yourself there, then put it as your backup. Its a good Uni in a lively city.

I'm basing this on you saying that you feel that it is unlikely you will get your predicted grades. If you do get them, then Leicester, Liverpool and even Lougborough are all very possible, and an insurance is unlikely to be necessary. But its a good solid backup plan

History isnt a competitive subject - this is why they have made you an offer with grades 'below'.

You have until *June* before you have to decide this, and by that time you may have a clearer idea of how your A levels are going, and if you are likely to do well enough to risk an AAA choice, or if ABB might be safer as a Firm with a lower grade Insurance. Yes, there will be places for History at credible Unis in Clearing so don't worry, that will always be there as a back-stop.

Hi @bellagoldd,

I would definitely agree with other posters in that you have plenty of time to make your firm and insurance choices. The date you'll likely have to return your decision is the 5th June 2025.

In the mean time, attending Open Days and Offer Holder Days could be a good way to help you decide. Our next NTU Open Day will be the 8th of March, and you'll be able to meet with staff and fellow students, as well as explore our sport facilities, clubs and teams. The other Universities will likely also send you invites to visit over the coming months, so keep an eye out for these communications!

It's also really important to make sure you're choosing a course that you're enthusiastic about. It can make it much easier to engage and succeed when you have that underlying passion carrying you through.

I hope this helps in making your decision. If you have any questions for us at NTU, feel free to let us know!

Thank you so much! Do you know if clearing is a long process to risk or with History as a less competitive subject it should be okay?

Clearing is risky and stressful - whatever the subject.
