Substitute my Applications

Hi all,
I have just received an "Alternative Offer" from University of Bristol, from MEng Aerospace Engineering to any of Electrical and Electronic, Civil or Mathematical Engineering (all MEng). essentially I have been rejected, and I have no desire to partake in these courses, I may have considered it if it was a Mechanical Engineering offer, however it is not. (I already have applied to Engineering Maths at bristol for my backup)

I had only submitted my application around 5~ days ago, and hear that I am able to substitute my application for another, and was wondering if this was an option? Bristol has not sent me an offer or rejection for this course on UCAS so I feel as if it may be fair game, and I also wonder if my odds may change if i apply to the BEng for Bristol AGAIN or something silly like that haha.

Any Thoughts? very ashamed as bristol was my main choice.

(stats - predicted A*AA in Maths, Physics and Computer Science, relatively strong personal statement (obviously Bristol do not care since they do not read them), mediocre GCSEs, but I am eligable for the contextual offer of AAB for aerospace, which usually offer A*AA.)
Your chances of an offer will not change if you reapply for the same course again - you'll just get another rejection so its a futile tactic. With A*AA its worth phoning Bristol to see why they rejected you - was it because of your GCSE profile?

Yes, if you are within 14 days of application you can substitute a choice even if you are 'rejected'.
Bristol wont actually reject you until you don't reply to their alternative offer before the deadline they have given you so you can do this on Hub.

ahh I imagine that the reason I was rejected was simply due to other students having higher profiles as the average grade achieved by a Bristol Aerospace student is A*A*A* according to UCAS. i achieved something like a 776665555553 at GCSEs which likely puts me below the crowd of 999999999s. I hoped they would give me a chance atleast since I am 2 grades above the contextual (same as 2 grades above their regular or so I thought)

I could still call them up and perchance ask for the reason and maybe even beg a lil for them to read my statement because i do have very very relevant supercurriculars and extracurriculars, and maybe them seeing my persistence will land me this?

Bristol was my main option and hope, so this is an unfortunate situation! If there are any other unis people highly recommend for aerospace that I could replace Bristol in my application for please do let me know, I do not have any knowledge of any other uni other than those I applied to (UCL, Loughborough, Bristol maths eng, Bath)

I am getting cold feet tbh - I regret swapping my application so soon and not calling Bristol. I am debating switching my UCL offer (which i am pretty confident I will not get, and would rather go bristol anyway) back to a Bristol MEng offer just so they reject me and I can call them up.

I am applying for a deferred entry, for 26/27, so it is not like they have already ran out of space on the course, and maybe I could use the fact that a) I meet their regular requirements while being a contextual student, b) I am applying for deferred entry so there guaranteed are spots available, c) i will stay for longer as I would do the MEng, and d) they have not read my personal statement, which strongly shows I am capable of completing the course passionately and that I have genuine interest in aerospace engineering. Thoughts?

Aerospace at Bristol is just crazy competitive I’m afraid. It’s my son’s first choice, but he’s currently “on hold” with Bristol having received offers from all his others. He already has an A* in maths and is predicted A*’s in his remaining 3 A levels (physics, economics, further maths) and even that hasn’t given him an immediate offer. They are waiting till they have all their applications in but I think the standard is just crazy high. We were told at the open day that his GCSES (six 9’s, three 8’s and a 7) were “probably just about ok”. He’s hopeful he’ll get an offer from them but if not, he’s more than happy with Sheffield as his back up who have an amazing aerospace course that is very well respected (3rd in country after Imperial and Bristol) and Sheffield is an excellent city. You should consider Sheffield too if you can still make changes. Good luck with your journey!

thank you so much for the response, that SUCKS!! i dont understand how your son can get put on hold like that - I feel offended for him that i thought i could compete with the applicants for Bristol - which is a shame because i did really love the teachers, city and university in general.
Currently I have:
UCL Mechanical
Bath Aerospace
Nottingham Aerospace
Loughborough Aerospace (offered)
Bristol Engineering Mathematics

A friend I have with near identical stats to your son is firm on Sheffield as he loves everything about it - more so than Bristol, which he received an offer from - so I think I will change my UCL application to Sheffield upon your advice and his (as UCL also seems to reject people with perfect records like your son haha)

Thank you so much! if i recieve an offer from sheffield, i will likely firm it now!

Ah amazing, glad I could be of help. Yes I think that seems like a great idea to switch from UCL to Sheffield. Also, it’s better if you have applications just for aerospace if that is what you want to do, rather than one for mechanical. It shows more commitment. Before they would confirm my son‘s offer, Sheffield asked him via his UCAS hub for more detail on why he specifically wanted to do aerospace and what he had done in the past that might have influenced this and what career he might see himself doing in the future. Being from a state school background he didn’t have tons of impressive aero-specific experiences, so he focused on the Formula One projects he had done at school, an early interest in flight and space etc, then after he had sent this additional paragraph they then sent him an offer. My point is they really want to see that you are definite about aerospace, not other engineering disciplines. Best of luck with your applications 😃

thank you for your recommendations - thats strange of sheffield's behalf i think, as surely they could just read his personal statement which would show reasons for interest and stuff right? I guess I will try and deal with that as best I can IF the time comes, thank you!

my main prospect / goal in life is to be an pilot (airline, as I am ineligible for the RAF) with university as a backup, and thanks to your recommendation of Sheffield i also found their option for 'Aerospace Engineering (Private Pilot Instruction)', which perfectly suits my needs to pursue flying after uni if I am unsuccessful in my attempts before uni,, this has been a godsend, tysm

Best of luck. Remember also, since you are taking a year out anyway, that if you don’t get your preferred course or uni choice this year and it gets to results day and you get very good results, you could always then choose to reject your existing firm and re-apply next year for the 2026 entry. Having a good set of A-levels already in the bag would make the whole application process a bit more straightforward. But fingers crossed you get the offers you want this time round anyway.

hi, i applied on the 28th for the university of keele - i want to also substitute my choice for the university of exeter diagnostic radiography but it's past the ucas application deadline... would you recommend?

Just call Exeter and (assuming the course is still open) ask whether it would make any difference as to how you are considered.

i received this too not long ago was a bit bummed coz i had 3 A*s but i guess it was just my GCSEs. I got offered the same 3 courses but I actually just called them up and asked if I could openly apply to any other course and they said yes. they are currently reviewing my application again for the new course
