University of Glasgow: Current Student Insights

Hi, I’m Anoosha, and I’m currently an MSc Earth Futures student here at the University of Glasgow (UofG). I also completed my undergraduate degree here in Geography this past June. I’ve really enjoyed my time at UofG and found immense value in learning from passionate and enthusiastic staff, going on field study trips like those to Mallorca and Glencoe, and engaging with our vibrant campus life.
When applying for my undergraduate degree, I applied to Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Leeds, and Queen Mary University of London—all for Geography/Sustainable Development degrees. I received offers from all universities but ultimately chose Glasgow for several reasons. I appreciated that the course was four years long and offered a flexible degree structure. In my first and second years, I studied additional subjects alongside Geography, with the opportunity to switch to one of those subjects in my third and fourth years or graduate with a Joint Degree if I wanted to. This flexibility relieved a lot of the pressure of choosing a subject, knowing I could explore other interests too. A piece of advice I’d give about the uni application/decision process is not to focus too much on league tables. Sure, they provide insight into the prestige of courses and institutions, but they don’t tell you anything about how you’ll experience them or why each place would be right/wrong for you. Social media is your friend! Use it to look up university or place specific clubs, societies, sports, student union pages, or other activities you enjoy. Choose somewhere that excites you, and that you can’t wait to explore.
I hope this was helpful! Feel free to ask any questions about UofG or my experience below.

Hi there, I’m Elise, a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering student here at Glasgow. I had a slightly unconventional journey to university, as I applied to university and left high school when I was 16, ‘skipping’ my last year of high school. As soon as I started thinking about university, I knew I wanted to study in either Glasgow or Edinburgh, as I wanted to be in a lively student city. Once I’d decided that I wanted to pursue a degree in engineering, my top choices were Strathclyde and Glasgow, due to the range of engineering courses and high rankings in league tables. I attended open days for Glasgow, Strathclyde and Edinburgh. What really stood out to me after visiting Glasgow was how much I loved the campus; both the students and staff were very friendly and how many opportunities there were to get involved in extracurricular clubs and societies. After visiting the open days and looking through the different programme structures, I decided to apply to Edinburgh, Heriott-Watt, Strathclyde and two courses at Glasgow. I ended up getting conditional offers for both courses at Glasgow and accepted my offer for Mechanical Engineering. The wait for result day was quite nerve-racking, but I got the results and have absolutely loved my time at Glasgow so far!
My biggest piece of advice when it comes to choosing universities is to make sure you look beyond the course. Obviously, programme structure, accreditation, league rankings can all be important, but you’ll find that many courses are similar across universities. Try to think about the other aspects of student life, and whether you think the university/city is the right fit for you. Do you like the location? Are there societies/clubs that you’re interested in? What student support services do they offer? Are there good social spaces/ events on campus? What are the facilities like? These are the things that are ultimately going to determine your student experience, so go with your gut, you’ll know when somewhere is right for you!

Any questions about student life, engineering, or just studying at Glasgow let me know!
