Lancaster vs York (Computer Science)

Hi! I've got offers from Lancaster and York for both ABB but I am really struggling to decide! I really loved the course at York and it has a placement year but I really loved the atmosphere at Lancaster so much and it felt like a really nice place I would be happy going. York is also a russel group which a lot of people in my school care about. I would love to hear any thoughts about this

You will probably get invited to Offer Holder visit days - a good opportunity to look around more critically, hear more info about the course, ask questions, and think about the reality of being at that Uni / living in that place.

RG doesnt actually mean anything significant - Lancaster, St Andrews etc are not part of it, and they are still top Unis.

Hi,

I would second the other poster - offer holder visit days are such a good way to have another look round and speak to other students and staff in your department! I studied a different subject at York but let me know if you have any questions about student life 🙂

Hello @unabashed-cy

I'm glad to hear that you're considering studying at Lancaster! I too was kind of torn when making my university options between York and Lancaster, but four years later I am still at Lancaster as a Law (Study Abroad) student and have no regrets in making this decision! I was similar to you, I liked York, but the atmosphere of Lancaster and the campus itself was on a different level in comparison to York.

Yes York may be a Russel Group University, but Lancaster typically ranks higher than a lot of other RG's so I wouldn't necessarily use this as a massive motivator as Lancaster still has a really great (if not better) reputation than a lot of these RG universities. You have to remember, this is the university you will be living and studying at for while, meaning it is important that it is the right decision and you prioritise how the atmosphere makes you feel and whether you can actually imagine yourself studying there. Being a "RG university" will only remain a motivator for so long is what I told myself!

If you would like to know a bit more about your course, I would really recommend this Page where you can speak to students who study your course and ask them any questions about their experience!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask!

Taylor (Lancaster Uni Student Ambassador).
