What jobs did you do in your gap year?

Hi, I'm currently in y13 and wanting to take a gap year.

My family is going to be struggling a bit next year financially as my parent has to interrupt their degree - they're doing a doctorate and will stop getting a bursary due to mental health. I wanted to take a gap year and get a job before this but now this has put even more emphasis on getting a well-paid (ish) job for next year, hence why I'm thinking about it now.

For a bit more context, I volunteered at my local library for about 6 months in y11 + helped with the summer reading challenge (which I think I'll start doing again this summer). Besides from that I don't have that much experience. I'm predicted A*s in A level English Lit, Drama and Psychology and have done a lot of theatre things in and out of school. The ideal scenario is that I'd work front of house in a theatre and also tutor in English as I want to do English Lit at uni - but I don't know how I'd do either as my family aren't very connected in either pathway.

At this rate I'm not too bothered about what I do, I just want to be able to make enough money to have good savings for university and potentially support my family. This might be a stupid question anyway but I was wondering if anyone else found really good paying jobs in their gap year and how exactly they got them as I feel a bit in the dark about the entire job application route.

Also would anyone recommend working in the summer too or just leaving it till September???
tbh id just have a browse, i ended up in a large tesco near me on nights, since I dont really have commitments in a gap year, all the overtime i could ask for, and nights pay really well for an entry level job. Jobs are abundant too around Christmas for temps, and if the store is large enough and you can work they tend to keep you on. But id browse consistently until they come around as a backup, the sooner you start, the more you can save.
Btw dont use the fact u could resit as an excuse to not try ur hardest in ur a-levels, i made that mistake and it isnt a fun process.

Thank you!!
I worked at a commercial estate agent for the fried fish industry... which is a really fancy way of saying we were an estate agency that listed fish and chip shops for sale. I did a year there full time during my gap year, and then I also worked there part time for a year during my first year of uni.

My daughter is currently working at Greggs during her gap year.

What a bizarre niche, I didn’t even know fish and chips shop sold frequently enough to warrant that 😂😂 What was the pay like on that

lol yeah it was a bit niche but you'd be surprised by how many chippys we had on our books!

The pay was alright at the time. I can't remember how much it was now, it was over 20 years ago, but I don't remember having any complaints about the pay.

This was the company: https://rosens.co.uk/
At the time they had 2 branches, one in Leeds and the head branch in London. I worked in the Leeds one, but it looks as though they only have the London branch now.
