Royal Holloway or LIPA?

I have applied for both unis for Music, I'm not sure which one would be better
Obviously LIPA is dedicated to Performance Arts but apparently Royal Holloway is always great for Music and closer to London which is where I ideally wanted to go, so I'm on the fence
I'm a singer/songwriter, alongside some other instruments
Any advice?

Hi there,

It's great to hear you're considering studying Music at degree-level. Why not take a look at our Music Performance at Royal Holloway webpage - it has all the information you need on the ensembles we have, performance opportunities, and more.

We would also recommend having a chat with a current music student here, where you can find out more.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London
I'm not that familiar with LIPA, but have just had a look at their undergraduate courses. A few comments:

1) At LIPA, it seems you'd be surrounded by performing arts students only - whereas at RHUL, you'd have a breadth of subjects spanning arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences to make friends with. So it depends on what you'd prefer, socially

2) RHUL is closer to London than LIPA, yes, but I think with LIPA you'd actually be in Liverpool city? Whereas Egham (where RHUL is based) is a 45 minute train journey to London minimum, and that's once you get to the train station. Depending on how fast you walk, the journey from the Piggory gate or back gate of the main campus, to Egham station, can be up to a 20 min walk up/down a steep hill

3) At LIPA, you'd be studying more contemporary and popular genres of music. At RHUL, I believe you would have to study at least a few compulsory modules of Western classical music. So it depends how interested and confident you are in doing that

That's actually really helpful thank you! Yeah one of my main issues was how far they are from London but RHUL also has a London campus so this just keeps getting even more complicated haha

The Central London "campus" RHUL has is just a building or two, which is only for certain courses :fyi: The undergrad music course is taught solely on the Egham campus afaik (I'm a PhD music student at Royal Holloway!) - so you'd probably want to base yourself in Egham unless you already live within commutable distance anyway!
Have you been able to visit both of them in person? If not, that might help you to make a decision :h:

Oh wow I didn't know that, thank you cuz I could not fine any info on it, if you don't mind me asking, how was your experience with them?

I have not unfortunately, they're pretty far from me and I don't have a car so it's very very far haha. I guess it would help to decide but I'm thinking more about which one has more opportunities and obviously where I would be able to get the most music industry experience at!

If you're wanting to break into the music industry, I imagine LIPA would have the better connections/set-up for that. Royal Holloway is a really strong music department and has invested a lot in new music tech facilities - but it's more of a mixture of different types of music (Western classical, pop, music tech, world musics, etc.) and was traditionally very much a Western classical music dept up until fairly recently. I'm not sure how much scope there is for songwriting as an assessed part of the course.

I've had a mixed time at Royal Holloway, tbh, but the PhD experience is very different to the undergraduate experience. I did my undergrad elsewhere and have not taught on undergrad modules at Royal Holloway - so cannot really comment on how you might find it, or what the undergrad experience is like :nah:
