Hi! What are the current popular societies and what is the campus like (specifically campus east)? Thanks!

Hi there,

I'm Hannah, I graduated from York in 2022, and I now work for the University 😊 I've tried to answer your questions below:

What are the current popular societies?

Unfortunately, I don't have any information on which societies are most popular, but we do have over 200 student societies at York, so there's something for everyone! You can browse a list of our societies on the York SU website.

During Welcome Week (aka Freshers' Week) there is usually a “Freshers' Fair” where most of our societies will have a stand, and new (and current) students can have a chat with society members to find out whether they should join. We also usually run something called, “Give it a go week”, where students can go along to society meetings without having to pay the membership fee (membership fees vary between societies, but can be as little as £5 for the full year). What I'm trying to say, is there are lots of opportunities to try out a society without committing to becoming a member.

What is the campus like (specifically campus east)?

Our campus is very green, with lots of open spaces ideal for picnics in the summer. Both Campus West and Campus East have a lake, which creates a really lovely setting for walking between your classes. Students often describe our campus as like living in a park, and we've had Green Flag status since 2013, in recognition of all our outdoor green spaces.

Campus West was built in the 1960s, so we have a lot of brutalist architecture and funky buildings, like Central Hall pictured below:

Campus East is the newer part of our campus, it started being built in the late 2000s. You can watch our Campus East video tour to get a better feel for the area. We have a tour of Campus West as well!

If you have any other questions, please put them in the thread and we'll do our best to help 😄

Hannah 😄
