Whether you’re a first year in halls or you're moving away for uni in September, it will probably come as no shock to you that bills can be super expensive! Especially on top of rent, saving on bills can be super helpful in making life a little bit less expensive. And whilst it’s definitely a conversation to have with housemates prior to moving in, here are a couple of tips on how to navigate and save on bills!
1 - make sure you have the right information!
Before you start the process of setting up your bills, it’s good to gather information on what your house can actually have! There’s no point in paying for an all inclusive bills package if you have a gas meter that can only be topped up in a certain way as it will just cost you more money! Often you can find this out from the lettings agents you go through, along with information such as the previous energy supplier used at your new address. Alternatively if you know the people living there before you definitely utilise that to find out what they did! It’s also worth researching if things such as water providers are specific. For those of you in Kingston you might find out you can only go through Thames Water which is super important to find out! Research for this shouldn’t take too long but is so important so that you don’t end up with complicated bills or paying twice for something that you don’t need to!
2- be realistic!
Sometimes when looking at bills it can be super easy to say you’ll never have the heating on or you’ll use next to no electricity, but that can be so miserable! There are ways to cut costs without freezing in your house and being realistic might cost you a little bit more but it is so worth it to make sure you don’t dread going home. If you’re living in a bigger house with more people it can definitely be worth looking at unlimited bills which with a fixed rate means you can have less stress about what you’re using. But also this goes vice versa, if you know that you don’t need everything unlimited or it will work out cost ineffective for you then look at individual bills. It make be ever so slightly more work but it’s not as complicated as it seems!
3- look around!
It may seem obvious but make sure to look around at different providers. Getting quotes and asking questions if you can is a great way to see if there’s anywhere that you can cut costs. Even if everywhere offers a bills package price for a similar cost, some places will offer certain deals that other won’t. Whether it’s an Amazon voucher that can be put towards something for the house or it’s half price Wi-Fi, these deals can mean you get a little bit more for the money that you have to spend anyways so why not!
