A level Choices for Econ

What are the most recommended subjects for economics? I'm aiming to get into a uni like Cambridge or Oxford. I've heard further mathematics is highly recommended but are there any disadvantages to not taking it? Thanks!

Maths is *far* more important / essential than Economics.
You don't actually need to have taken A level Economics at all.

Warwick - A*A*A including A in Mathematics
Bristol - A*AA including Mathematics
Sheffield - AAB including Mathematics
Etc.

Check the specific entry requirements for the courses/Unis you are interested in.

FM is pretty much a requirement for Cambridge and LSE, so you'd definitely be at a disadvantage there for not taking it. For other unis (Oxford, UCL, Warwick etc.) you'll be fine with just maths. Other common subjects include economics/history/physics/chemistry/geography but none of these are required.

If aiming for Oxbridge I'd take maths/FM/econ. 4th A level isn't necessary but if you do you could choose one from the list above, or just something you enjoy

Hi,

Final-year Economics and Arabic student here! Entry requirements vary by university, but most—including Oxford and Cambridge—only require Maths, with Cambridge also recommending Further Maths.

While having Economics is definitely useful, most universities don’t specifically require it. If you want to maximise your chances and feel comfortable with the workload, the best A-Level combination is generally Economics, Maths, and Further Maths. However, strong applicants with different subject choices can still be competitive!
