Manchester - MA Heritage Studies vs MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies

I'm considering applying for one of them - based on the website they seem quite similar. Heritage studies seems more focused on theory and museum studies on practice but quite a few modules can be studied on either course. Does anyone have any experience of either course or advice on how they'd be perceived by employers (in a museum/heritage sector context)?

Watching this because I’m also in the same boat.

My concern was that the museum studies course would be focused solely on typical museums and galleries and wouldn’t explore heritage sites like historic houses. I liked the sound of the course for its practicality but I want to keep my options open to careers in a variety of types of museums and heritage sites. And the Heritage studies course sounds more broad.

I ended up emailing the course leader recently and he told me that the museum course wouldn’t prevent me from exploring heritage sites, similarly the heritage course wouldn’t stop me from exploring museum practice.

I don’t know if this helps you at all but I thought I’d mention it since no one else has replied.

I think I’m going with the museum course because imo the info about the heritage studies course on the website is kinda vague about how practical it actually is.

Thanks for replying - good to know someone else is out there in a similar situation!

That's reassuring to hear neither of them would be limiting.

I've ended up sending applications in for both of them, but I think I'm leaning towards the museum studies. As you said the heritage studies sound kinda vague and abstract whereas the museum studies seems more hands-on so I feel more attracted to that.

I’ve ended up applying for both too! Am still leaning towards museum studies though, hoping to do it part time starting either this September or next.

Hi, I am in a similar situation and was wondering if you had any more thoughts if you did end up starting the course?

Hi! I ended up going with the Art Gallery and Museum Studies course and I’m enjoying it so far! I’m doing it part time, so only doing one module per semester. That means so far I’ve only done one module, Introduction to Museum Studies. This one has been quite theory focused, but apparently the compulsory module I’ll take next year will be more practical, that ones called Collections Care, Management and Development.

There’s also the option of doing optional modules from either museum studies or the heritage studies course
