Financing GEM in UK as an Irish citizen.

Hello,

I (24YO Female), am currently in the final stages of my application to Graduate Medicine at University of Nottingham. I am hoping to enter this year 2025 and despite all the researching I have done prior to applying for this course, I am confused about what, as an Irish citizen still currently living in Ireland, I am eligible for in terms of tuition/maintenance loans and or grants.

The university have contacted me and told me based on the information I provided I classify for 'home fee status'. I believe that means I pay the UK Home Fees £9535 (for the year 2025/26).

As I have mentioned before, I am applying to Graduate Medicine, which means I already have a degree, that I completed in Ireland. I did not get any finance/support while I was studying. Paid for everything myself and with the help of some family (and with great difficulty). I read somewhere that a second degree, makes me ineligible for tuition fee loan? Is this true?

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could please provide some help and clarify what it is exactly I am entitled to/can avail of. Thank you.

I am expecting to move for university before it begins, so early August. Ideally however, I would like to find a job as soon as I get an offer and maybe even move down sooner.

Hi gafam,

Thank you for confirming. Is it a honours degree that you current hold?

Thanks, Clare

Hi there, Irish Citizens can apply as Home Students if they been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the first day of the first academic year of the course and be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of the course. If however, you do not meet this criteria, you may meet the EU eligibility criteria. Irish citizens will be eligible to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan if they have been:

Resident in the UK, EEA or Switzerland by 31st December 2020 and resident in the UK, Gibraltar, the EEA and Switzerland for the three years before the first day of the first academic year if studying in England.

OR

Resident in the UK, Islands and Ireland for the three years before the first day of the first academic year

Thanks, Stephen.
