Vet Med 2nd Degree

Hi, I have previously completed a 4 yr BSc (full time) and a 3 yr MSc (part time) - all utilising SFE.

I've been offered a place for vet med (D100). I am fully aware I need to self fund for the tuition fees. However, am I eligible for anything else?

Additionally, if I can start an application, as I am a "mature student" (over 25), because I am the sole earner for my household, am I expected to put in how much I earn currently (as I am currently working full time, 32K salary), or how much I'll earn when I start the course, which will be just part time with a significant pay cut?

Will appreciate any support/advice

Cheers

Hi Beth,

As you're the student we don't ask for your income when assessing your application. Are you living with a partner or married? Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

No I don’t live with a partner or married.

I do currently live with my parents, but my mum has never worked & my dad is retired.

Thanks

Hi betha2,

Thank you for confirming. As advised, we don't take your earned income into account when assessing your Maintenance Loan and as you do not have a spouse or partner, you will be assessed as an independent student automatically if you have selected that you wish you receive the income assessed element.

Thanks, Clare

So just to confirm,
Because I currently live with my retired parents & I do not live with a parter or married, at the time of the SFE assessment, I don’t have to put in my current wage or any wage? As my dad is retired, I don’t have to put anything re his pension?

And I’ll be eligible for a maintenance loan?

Thanks

Hi betha2,
That is correct.
Thanks, Clare

Hi me again,

Because I can still apply for a maintenance loan, would I be potentially eligible for the max amount? Or would I be penalised due to already having a BSc and MSc?

Cheers

Beth

Hi betha2,

Just to confirm, are you over the age of 25 prior to the first day of the academic year?

Graduate Entry Veterinary courses can now be classed as exceptions for those who already hold a degree. These students can access maintenance support only (Maintenance Loan as well as supplementary grants and/or DSAs where applicable) subject to meeting the standard eligibility requirements).

This means that your Maintenance Loan would not be affected by your previous qualification, it is only the Tuition Fee Loan that is affected.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Yes I’d be over 25, so I could be eligible for the full maintenance loan?

Regarding supplementary grants - is this something with SFE?

And what are DSAs?

thanks again for your help!

Hi Betha,

If you want to follow the steps here: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/student-finance/undergraduate

This will break down the funding for you and what each finance is. Thanks, Jason
