Hi there Year 12s

Attending a university open day is a great way to explore the campus, meet lecturing staff, chat with current students and dive deeper into learning about the courses. With all that said, some find it not always possible or worth their while to attend.

So, we want to know - What, if any, is the main reason you'd be discouraged from attending a university open day?

Could it be the cost of travel? schedule conflicts? or already feel confident in your choices and don't need to attend? take a vote in the poll above and share your thoughts below! there's no right or wrong answer, however, we're only looking for the one main reason! :beard:

This is so interesting to see what the main reasons students aren't planning on attending open days! When I was in year 12 I tried to go to as many of the open days for my uni's as I could, but sometimes things outside of your control mean you can't (like not knowing how to drive🤣)
Seeing that (at time of writing) 28% of the yr 12s aren't going to open days because of travel costs is really sad. Here at Brighton we offer reimbursement for travel costs for our applicant days! We offer reimbursement of up to £50. You can find out more about the Brighton Boost for applicant event travel here including the eligibility criteria.
This would have been a lifesaver when I was applying as I could have taken a train instead of relying on my parents to drive me or missing out.

For the people worrying about attending new places or meeting new people, most Unis give an itinerary of what will happen before the day. There are also virtual tours of campuses you can take (normally a youtube video) to help you become a bit familiar with the area, however even if you do get lost things will be okay there will be lots of people around the campus that are happy to help you! I got horribly lost on one of my open days and now I'm finishing my final year at that uni 🤣 Brighton Open and applicant days also have quiet rooms incase everything gets too much. You can also state on your booking that you may need extra support and the events team will try their best to help!

Good luck to everyone who has applied to uni and i hope to see some of you at our applicant days!

I chose poor timing.
Hi everyone,

I can see why distance and travel costs are currently the top reasons for attending open days as it can take up a lot of time and money.

I was lucky that I could stay with friends from the south (My family home is in the north) and would visit a few universities at a time. Sometimes just visiting the local town may be helpful or often you can request a tour. It definitely takes a lot of planning to try and get a few done at once.

Car sharing is something me and my friends did to reduce costs, so if you can find out when your friends are going to open days and see if you can join them.

Kingston offers webinars and virtual experiences which can be useful for research, here is the link where you can find out more Open Days and events - Kingston University London

Going to university is a huge investment and definitely requires doing lots of research since you are going to be spending lots of your time and money on attending university. If you decide to go you will have to travel the distance potentially a couple of times a year as well as moving your stuff, so sometimes it is good to experience what it is like to see whether it is for you.

I hope this helps

I chose poor timing.

There are typically a few spread out across the year, do you find they're all bad timing? 🙂

I haven't attended any yet but having them during mocks would be bad?
How do I find out more about open days?

I’m at Aston now, on my 5-year apprenticeship, so i’ve already started, but i felt discouraged because i felt intimidated by the whole place. Attending an open day with students milling about, i felt uncomfortable and even with people around, the directions, signage, and lecture scheduling, were really not very good

never attended open days because i knew they'd just be straight up lying about how good they are. why would i voluntarily attend an event thats just a giant advertisement? its better to hear about students' real life experiences online where theyre not being forced to say they love it

I never went in year 12 because of distance ( like 5.5k km away :colondollar: ) although I planned some as an offer holder, once it seemed more worth the time and cost.
