Child care grant and school holidays?
I began my undergraduate degree in September 2024 (1st year) and i receive the child care grant. I am due to place my children in a nursery however I’m confused on how the payment service works.
Due to limited space in the baby room, the nursery is unable to accept children for only part of the year. So my query is, in terms of school holidays such as summer/Easter /Christmas period- does the child care grant also cover these periods (all year round) if there are still funds available or would I not be able to pay via CGS through these periods and have to self cover the payments for that time?

Hi Dsjxx,
Yes, the Childcare Grant will cover all days within the academic year including holidays, as long as you have remaining entitlement left to use.

Just to be absolutely clear- when you say it covers the whole academic year.. would that mean it would cover nursery payments up until my next payment date for CGS (if funds were still available)- when I’d start my second year in September 2025?
I apologise for my confusion, I’m just trying to establish if there would be a certain cut of point/month in which I’d have to self fund until I receive my next CGS payment for my second year. For example, if my 1st year university term ended in June, would I still be able to access my CGS account to cover the costs for childcare until I return to university for second year or would I have to self fund from June-September until I return for my 2nd year and receive my next payment.

Hi Dsjxx,
Yes, it is awarded until the 1st of September when your new academic year starts. The only time it ends on the last date of your last term will be the final year of your course when you will no longer be a returning student.
