Veterinary Medicine as a 2nd Degree as a mature student

Hiya, I am confused about what I would be eligible for maintenance loan wise. I finished my first degree in 2023.

I am 24 currently, will be 25 when I start in September. I currently live with a parent and work full time but when I start my studies I will not be working and may either move in with my partner or live alone (depending on where I go).

Who would support my application and what would I be eligible for? Would I be able to use this maintenance loan towards tuition.

Thank you!

Hi vgsgold,

If you are over 25, you would be assessed as an independent student automatically, we do not take your earned income into account, so you would likely be eligible for the maximum Maintenance Loan unless you have savings, investments or any other taxable income outside of employment.

If you live with your partner, we would use their household taxable income details to assess the Maintenance Loan should you wish to apply for the higher income assessed amount.

I have provided a link to the Student Finance Calculator, where you can check the approximate amounts you may be eligible for.

If I am 24 when I apply for SFE but will be 25 when I start, will they count me as 24 or 25?

Hi vgsgold,

You mentioned that you will be 25 when you start in September. If you are 25 prior to the first day of the academic year, which is the 1st of September, you are an independent student. If you turn 25 after the 1st of September, it is your parents who support the application with their financial details for the income assessed element of the Maintenance Loan.

Thanks, Clare
