Postgraduate reference

So I applied for masters at a different uni and I got a conditional offer where the only condition is if I can give an academic reference. However, where I did my undergrad like the lectures I had weren’t very friendly at all. Also my supervisor I had for my final year, she was also my personal tutor (which I think she’s my best shot) but me and her we didn’t really get along as well I felt like she was very passive aggressive towards me. So I’m in a dilemma. I don’t want to decline the offer as they offer a course that I really want to do.

Just ask your personal tutor. Often the reference is not that important, just needs to show that you were in good standing with no particular issues.

Hi there,

There are 3 ways you could go about this:

1.

Just ask your personal tutor. There is a chance that given that you probably had not spent a lot of time with her, that you simply didn't know each other well enough to build a rapport. Even if she did not necessarily like you, that does not mean that she won't give you a fair and honest reference that is an accurate representation of your character and work.

2.

Consider other staff as academic references. Think back on all the tutors that taught you in your final year (or second year) and consider whether they could provide you a reference. Your tutors will have most likely spent more time with you than your personal tutor and would be able to vouch for your academic contributions. They don't necessarily need to have taught you for a whole year, maybe just a module.

3.

Contact the university and ask if they would consider a professional reference. You could reach out to the university's admissions team and explain the situation you are in and ask if they would consider a professional reference as an alternative. Universities don't normally require a reference and it is possible that they would consider your application without.

I would highly recommend trying any of these options but as a Plan B, you could start considering other options. Like I said earlier, not all universities require academic references for Postgraduate students. SOAS for example does not need an academic reference: SOAS Postgraduate Requirements.

I hope this helps 🙂
