Just get the basic iPad currently sold by Apple if you want something for standard student-y things, it is more than enough tablet for 90% of people.

Lots of brands sell cheap tablets, the issue is that cheap tablets just aren't usually very good, normally using bargain bin processors and slow memory/storage which can lead to a less than ideal user experience.

The best option I can find for under £200 is this Lenovo tablet. The processor isn't great but the best I could find of any tablet bought new at this price, and the storage is slow but at least it gets double what most tablets at this price point get, at 128GB compared to the usual 64GB. It's also got a relatively new version of Android released in 2023, a good screen with a resolution north of 1080p, build quality is decent and it's made by a reputable manufacturer.

However the option I'd be more inclined to go for is still an iPad, only this time looking at the used market, with the best option I can find being the 3rd Generation iPad Air from 2019. Despite being over four years older than the Lenovo above, it absolutely runs circles around it in every aspect- the processor is literally twice as powerful, the storage is substantially faster, the screen is significantly higher resolution and better quality, it's slimmer and only a few grams later despite the superior metal construction, and even being six years old it's received the latest version of Apple's operating system released literally this week, while the Lenovo's OS is from 2023. iPads also have a far better wealth of tablet optimised apps as well as significantly better stylus support. It really is a far better tablet despite being quite a bit older, and you can find it from companies like CEX for the reassurance of a 5 year warranty in place.
