Should I go to The Northern School of Art Foundation Interview

I’m a Manchester student and would prefer to go to MMU for uni as it’s local, and study an Art Foundation. I applied to several foundation courses as backups, I applied to the Northern School of Art online as I saw someone talk about it on here (previously the school was called Cleveland I think) but the application didn’t require any of my work or a statement, and said it would email me with further details. Instead it emailed me inviting me to an interview in two weeks in Middlesbrough to physically bring my art, which I found kind of strange as they barely took any info from me in the first place. I’m not sure I even want to go to and my art teacher thought it seemed strange too. I can’t find anyone talking about the school/foundation - does anyone have any info on what the foundation course is like and if it’s worth going all the way to Middlesbrough for the interview? This process seems a bit weird to me.

Hey! I don't know much about the Foundation course especially, but just checking on the site it says in the entry requirements "ONE A-LEVEL PLUS AT LEAST THREE GCSES (INCLUDING MATHS AND ENGLISH) AT C/4 GRADE OR ABOVE PLUS A SUITABLE PORTFOLIO OF WORK"

I agree with you it's a bit odd that they didn't ask for a statement, but I think going to the interview would still potentially be worthwhile to get a grasp of its whereabouts and the people teaching you. When I went to my interview for a BA course there I thought it was a bit odd that they didnt ask for proof of ID or grades or anything like that. At the end of the day the choice to go to the interview is still up to you!!

Good luck!!

Thank you so much! I did end up doing an online interview and the interviewer was really nice, though I think they forgot about me because no one turned up to the teams meeting for 45 mins until I emailed asking about it🧍*♀️

I basically just ranted about my work until he asked some of his own questions, I thought the process was really good and that they offered a really good course. I was offered a place but I think I’m going to go elsewhere for convenience of location, but also bc I found the whole forgetting about the interview thing weird.

Thank you !!

I went to this uni for 3 years (from 2014-2017) and I absolutely loved every minute of it. The uni has everything you need and the ratio of teachers to students is brilliant. The classes are generally smaller than other universities as it’s only for Art students, therefore is primarily focused on creativity.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi @yellowduckdm

Great to hear you're considering Manchester Met for your Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course. Our programme is designed to develop your skills and portfolio with a view to then applying to one of our Manchester School of Art courses: Art and Design undergraduate degrees, or to another institution.

It allows you to explore different artistic techniques and media, building on your creative skills and helping you to choose your specialist area for degree level study. On this course you will have opportunities to be part of Manchester School of Art events, artist residencies and exhibitions.

If you're on Instagram, you can give our Manchester School of Art a follow at @mcrschart, and if you have any questions feel free to ask them on here, get in touch with one of our current textiles students here, or give our course Enquiries team a call on 0161 247 6969 ([email protected]).

Hope this helps and good luck!
Mel 😊

Sorry to hear you had a bad interview experience - forgetting about an applicant and leaving them in a teams call for 40 minutes is definitely not a good look :frown: Glad it seemed to work out ok in the end. Best of luck with your application to MMU!

Being asked to attend an interview without submitting a digital portfolio first is uncommon, but definitely not out the question. Usually digital portfolios are a way of initially sifting applicants so they can narrow down a large number of prospective students - at a guess the reason they skipped the digital portfolio phase is just because they get less applications for this course, so they have the time to interview everyone.

If you don't mind me asking, what course did you do? I'm applying for the illustration course this year and I'd love to know more about the uni in general 🫶

I did my first year of bachelors here (different to Middlesborough campus). Institutionally they’re awful, you have this small office of staff who overstep the pastoral staff who should know more about what they’re doing to protect their ‘reputation’. I was SA’d and had rumours spread about me by the person behind it, they just covered it up.
