writing an english lit essay

Hi all, I'm struggling a bit with figuring out just how much I should write for my 2,000 word essays/how much to plan out (at undergraduate level). I'm aware I need to write holistically but, as a guideline, how many points/body paragraphs is standard? Also, for each point, how much evidence should I be using? For example, should I be aiming for 3 main points, with 2 pieces of evidence each? Thank you!!

Hey there! I totally understand how tricky it can be to figure out how much to write and how to structure your essays. For a 2,000-word undergraduate essay, you're on the right track thinking about the balance between planning and writing holistically. Here's a friendly breakdown that might help:

1.

Number of Points/Body Paragraphs: For a 2,000-word essay, you'll usually want about 4-6 body paragraphs, depending on how deep you go into each point. If you go with 4 paragraphs, that means each one should be pretty meaty, and if you go with 5 or 6, each might be a bit more concise. It really depends on the complexity of the topic, but this range usually works well.

2.

How Much Evidence Per Point: You're right to think about how much evidence to use. As a general guideline, aim to provide 2-3 pieces of evidence per point. This can include quotes, data, examples, or references to theories. For each piece of evidence, be sure to explain why it supports your point, rather than just inserting it without much context.

3.

Planning: Before you dive into the actual writing, spend some time on an outline. I'd recommend breaking your essay into an introduction, 4-6 body paragraphs (each with a clear argument), and a conclusion. For each body paragraph, jot down the point you're making, the evidence you'll use, and a brief explanation of how it ties back to your main argument. This will help you stay on track and ensure everything connects.

A rough breakdown of the word count might look like this:

Introduction: 100-150 words (introduce the topic and your thesis statement)

Body Paragraphs: Around 150-300 words per paragraph, depending on how many paragraphs you have

Conclusion: 100-150 words (summarize your points and restate the thesis)

Hi! Normally, the essay rubric would be there to guide you. If not, you can adopt any of the suggested model here. I'd advise you, however, to have one main idea in each paragraph, and have 2_4 supporting lines after it. I'd also go for 7 paragraphs in the body, assuming each carries 250 words. Then intro and conclusion can share the remaining words.
