Would a placement year put me a year behind in career progression?

Hello,
I will be doing civil & structural engineering with a foundation year, and I was wondering if I should do a placement year.

Would a placement year put me another year behind from being able to progress onto higher roles, like a senior engineer or obtaining chartership?

What if I were to do internships instead in summers rather than doing a whole year in industry? Could the year in industry count towards any role progression?

Thanks.

engineering is definitely one of those sectors where work experience is brilliant for whether that is a placement year or internships it can really help you. alternatively to a placement year you could get a grad position or as you said internships during summer and such

When it comes to getting grad jobs in engineering, actual engineering experience is extremely useful. A year in industry may be thought of as the "gold standard" when it comes to this, though summer internships are also very useful. The work you do in a placement year certainly can count towards chartership if it is at a suitable level - which it can be at many companies. It's true that you certainly don't have to do a year in industry, or even a summer placement, to get a grad job (not even at a very reputable company), but they do help, and there is a reason why lots of students actively look for courses with a placement year.

With the state of the grad market, people with a placement year have a significant advantage in getting a grad job. They are not required, but gosh they do help. It all depends if you can get a placement year though, as you have to apply for them like grad jobs and they are also very competitive.

Hi there,

It's great that you are weighing out your options. I would recommend doing a placement year but if not like you said doing internships during summer will also help. Having experience once you graduate will help so much. I did a placement year and due to having that experience I got a graduate job a lot sooner than other people. I wouldn't say it would put you behind if anything it'd do the opposite and give you a head start as a graduate.

Placement years and internships give you so much industry experience which is something employers look for. Doing a placement year, allowed me to grow in confidence, develop my skills and make connections. I didn't study a course like you but I imagine in an engineering sector, having experience would definitely help.

Hope this helps and you make the best decision for yourself 🙂
Best wishes,
^Zac
