Vet medicine help - retaking GCSEs. Is it worth it and how?

Hey!
I recently posted on here regarding veterinary medicine. I have a grade 5 in both GCSE Chemistry and Maths, I am currently in year 13 studying A level biology, psychology and Religious Studies. I applied for university and got rejected from Uclan vet medicine, but I have 3 offers for vet nursing and 1 pending.
Here's where I need a little help, by retaking those GCSEs, hopefully at a college, I can apply to Nottingham Prelim, SRUC and UClan for vet med (Since I don't do A level Chemistry), if I manage to get the A level grades.

If I retake GCSEs can I still apply through UCAS in October despite not taking the GCSE exams till 2026? As in does it still work as the grades are "pending" in a way- will I need to get predicted grades for them?
Is this worth it? Or should I accept my vet nursing courses- vet medicine just has always been my dream job.

I could take an access to HE but they still consider GCSE grades so that will only really help me apply to UClan and Bristol.

Thank you!

If you want to do vet med you are going to have to redo those subjects. There is NO other solution. Any offer made would then be subject to you getting the required GCSE. grades alongside the A level requirements. BUT I’m not going to sugar coat this, vet med is a VERY competitive course and the fact that you don’t have chemistry A level is a disadvantage . That doesn’t mean that getting a place is impossible but you would have to do outstandingly well on the rest of the application process. I would be tempted to advise ( only my opinion) doing a veterinary nursing diploma course without going to university whilst studying an access course in order to gain some practical experience and to find out if you could « settle » for this profession because it is very different to being a vet. Different doesn’t mean better or worse, but the professions are NOT the same. The diploma route would mean you wouldn’t use your right to SFE financing. If you then decided to attempt vet med it would still be possible to have both the fee and maintenance loans. Either way you’ll have to do those GCSE ‘s

Hi thanks for your response! 🙂 I'm sorry if I didn't really make it clear, but I am aware there is no other solution.

I'm aware I have to retake those GCSEs, and I understand A level Chemistry is needed and I could even say its required- but there are vet medicine universities that surprisingly don't require chem (Like I said, SRUC, UClan undergrad and foundation and Nottingham preliminary year) and although competitive, it is possible.

What I'm actually wondering is how I would apply on UCAS to those universities I mentioned this October, if I hadn't actually resat them YET. Like I understand I'd have to put my first grade in both chem and maths- but if I'm resitting in May and applying in October can I put the status of the second GCSE grade as pending?

Also if I don't get in after doing the GCSE grades I'm planning to either do an access to HE or A level chemistry and REAPPLY the following year. It seems really long- but isn't it worth it for my dream career? I'm planning to wait until results day to see what my current A level grades are to decide if I- quite frankly, have the brains for vet medicine and can actually survive in the course (trying to be realistic).

Thank you so much for your advice!!

As I said above, any offer would just include your GCSE grades as part of the conditions as for the A level grades. So yes you would put them as pending although you would also have to include your initial grades.

Thank you!! I just wanted to double check there was an option for pending grades alongside initial grades on UCAS. You've been alot of help, I really appreciate it. Have a nice day
