SQA subjects for medicine

I'm choosing my S6 subjects soon and I'm debating what my 5th subject should be.
I'm hoping to apply for Medicine, UofG being my top choice. My current highers (predicted straight As) are human biology, english, maths, and music technology. I already have an A from higher music in S4. I'm going to crash higher chemistry and do both AH maths and biology next year; which leaves one slot for another subject or free block. My choice right now is between no subject, higher history, or n5 physics. Would higher history be useful for med or would n5 physics be better even though it's an N5? Or would neither still be fine as I will have my 5 highers from S4/5 + 1 in S6 (not sure if higher history would be too stressful alongside 2 AHs and crash chem)? I will be asking my guidance teachers about this too, just want some second opinions

Neither would be fine to me honestly, nat5 phyiscs they wouldn’t really care about, they would look at higher history if you managed to achieve an A but with your current choices you will succeed in high grades more if you don’t add on another subject to the workload. What are the entry requirements? If you fully meet them or will without it don’t add another subject.

All you need is 5 highers, preferably all at an A, with higher chemistry and another science, maths is accepted as a science.
Then you need 2 Advanced highers, one of which has to be a science and they usually want 2 B's or above in these. They also ask for Nat 5 English at a B.
Don't put too much work on yourself, you will be far too busy to be doing extra things with the UCAT to study for, interviews to prep for, work experience and volunteering commitments etc.
Best of luck, if you have any more questions I'll do my best to answer them!

thanks for the advice! The entry requirements are AAAAB highers by the end of S5 and ideal requirements are AAAAA(A?) by the end of S6.

thanks for the advice! I've decided to just take an extra free block where I'll help the lab technicians and younger classes (or maybe take a science related NPA if the columns work out)!

Sounds good!
Best of luck with your future, we might end up being in the same med school cohort one day!

i think you’d definitely be better doing either no subject or a “fun” subject, for example we do courses in things like barista at my school as most unis for medicine only require 5 highers and two adv highers - your ucat will definitely be more important than higher history or nat 5 physics and only taking 3 subjects could give you more time to study for it

Couldn't have said this better myself.
Are you applying this year?

It needs to be 5 highers in s5. Get in contact with the unis, as I was in a similar situation and was only able to apply to edinburgh, as they are the only uni which accepts early highers - none of the rest do and require them to be sat in 1 sitting

I only did 4 highers in S5 and got 4 unconditionals from Stirling, strath, Edin & Cale. then a conditional for Glasgow.

This is medicine, not whatever course you are talking about.

With medicine, you're guaranteed conditional offers, if you get any, offers. The first step in the application is to obtain the correct grades and if you don't get them, they will reject you automatically.

Well for medicine, all 5 highers need to be sat in the same year, and you never get an unconditional offer.
I know you are trying to help but the only thing worse than being wrong is being wrong and acting like you are right.

I literally didn’t act like I was right after I was wrong. I’m aware I was misinformed. calm down mate

Out of curiosity, why would they require all 5 to be sat in one year? I understand about first sittings (ie no resits) and the academic challenge element of taking 5 highers, but it makes no sense if it was based on academic challenge/difficulty not to accept a combo of highers and advanced highers
